People With Strict Parents Describe The Most Absurd Rules They Had To Live By

Kids already deal with schoolwork, adolescence, and the daunting task of growing older. Add in a few absurd rules from parents, and you have the perfect recipe for teen angst and rebellion. A 9 pm curfew sounds unfair - until your parents tell you that sneezing more than "twice in a row" is grounds for punishment. More than just entertaining, these outrageous parenting techniques reveal the surprising number of crappy parents in the world.

  • Rated 'M' For 'Mother Knows Best'

    From Redditor /u/allou_stat:

My mom was very strict about the ratings of movies and video games. One year for Christmas a relative gave me a copy of Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire for the Nintendo 64. It was a T (for teen) rated game and I wouldn't be turning 13 for another four weeks. My mom had my dad drive me to Toys 'R' Us to return the game.

We walked into the store and over to the games and he had me pick out an E (for everyone) rated game. We proceeded to check out, and as we went to the car he handed me not only the new game but the game we were supposed to have returned as well and told me not to let her catch me playing it.

  • Sinning On 'The Sims'

    From Redditor /u/sowhatonion:

I was not allowed to use the money cheat on Sims growing up because that's not how the 'real world' works. I used the cheat once and couldn't explain where all the money I had came from so I was grounded and had Sims taken away.

  • Give And Take (But Mostly Take)

    From Redditor /u/thebangzats:

Not my parents, but I had a friend who got it pretty bad: "If you want to play for one hour, you have to also practice piano for one hour."

This rule and others were posted on his bedroom door.

  • Crashing The Mario Party

    From Redditor /u/zaqhavok:

I wasn't allowed to say, "I died," on Mario. I "lost one of my chances to succeed."

  • Dad Needs To Grow Up

    From Redditor /u/unsweetee:

My dad didn't believe in periods. He literally didn't believe that a female needed to use products because he didn't understand the amount of blood. He was very religious and made reference to the women in "Bible times" who did not use or need products. When I cried that I needed feminine products, he gave me food stamps to buy them. I was humiliated.

He accused me of cutting myself and called the police. I was 12. It wasn't too long after that I was sent to live with my mom. But by then, I was already traumatized. That f*cker is still crazy; I haven't spoken to him since then.

  • Bad Mom Award

    From Redditor /u/Lipsickandpixiedust:

When I was in 5th grade I wrote some stuff in my diary about masturbating, and like a month late my mom went through all my stuff. She would randomly go in my room and tear it apart. I'd always get in trouble for something, and then I'd have to clean up the mess and be grounded for whatever amount she felt like that day.

So anyway, she found that diary entry. She picked me up from school and wouldn't talk to me. I got home, my door was removed from my room, the diary entry was taped on the wall, and I was threatened with a belt if I didn't answer all her invasive questions.

    F*cked up.
