"Coolest national anthem" almost sounds like an oxymoron. National anthems are, for the most part, considered staid, serious, and maybe even boring. You hear them at the Olympics and, in many countries, before almost every sporting event. But national anthems that go hardest are a reminder that they are also pretty bombastic, resulting in some truly metal national anthems.

And if you look into the full versions of these songs, even supposedly tame anthems - like Canada's - put themselves in the running for the most metal national anthem out there - and the coolest way to show some patriotism.

  • France: 'La Marseillaise'

    "La Marseillaise" was adopted as the national anthem of France in 1795, three years after it debuted under its original name: "Chant de guerre pour l'armée du Rhine" ("War Song for the Army of the Rhine").

    In 1853, a competition was held to create a national anthem for Mexico. The winner was poet Francisco Gonzalez Bocanegra; according to legend, he didn't want to enter the competition, but his fiancee locked him in a room until he finished writing the lyrics. Composer Jaime Nunó Roca wrote the music.

    The lyrics for the national anthem - also called "Poland Is Not Yet Lost" - were written in 1797 to boost morale among soldiers fighting off Napoleon's forces.
