Jealousy often pushes people to unorthodox, possessive actions, so anime characters with jealousy issues can drive a storyline.
In some cases, a character's thirst for superiority prompts them to work hard and improve themselves. Mello from Death Note probably wouldn't have developed his logical thinking skills if he weren't constantly pitting himself against Near. While his ceaseless envy does lead him to join gangs and kidnap civilians, the expectations placed upon him at a young age make him seem like a sympathetic villain.
Unfortunately, Mello is a rare case, as plenty of jealous anime characters push the limits of acceptable behavior. In Shuffle! Kaede Fuyou becomes wildly jealous of any girl her beloved Rin talks to, leading her to violent behavior.
Whatever form it takes, jealousy is a human emotion, and although its presence can make a character unlikable, that doesn't mean they're not relatable.
True to their name, the homunculus Envy of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is wracked by jealousy. Though they claim to despise humans and find them inferior, Envy actually secretly wishes they were more humanlike—specifically, they dream of forming genuine bonds with others and feeling a full range of emotions.
Their desperate desire to be more human comes to a humiliating end. After they're defeated by Edward Elric, they're finally able to tearfully acknowledge what they've always wanted and will never have.Jealous much?

You might not think that the all-powerful prince of Saiyans would have anything to feel jealous about, but Vegeta can't stop comparing himself to his rival, Goku. He wants desperately to prove himself superior, but eventually he does learn to appreciate his own abilities and stop comparing them to Goku's.
However, he remains jealous when it comes to his wife Bulma. When Goku promises Old Kai he'll show him some sexy pictures of Bulma, Vegeta's furious, which honestly isn't the worst thing. Those aren't Goku's, Old Kai's, or Vegeta's pics to show, after all.Jealous much?
Seto Kaiba may be the CEO of a multi-billion dollar company and a world-class duelist, but that doesn't mean he's satisfied with his life.
No, Kaiba is wildly jealous of his rival Yugi Mutou because Yugi is better at card games than he is. To be fair, that actually means something in the world of Yu-Gi-Oh!, since card games determine the outcomes of business deals, the safety of children's souls, and even the fate of the entire world.Jealous much?
Everyone loves Pikachu, much to the chagrin of Mimikyu. This copycat Pokémon is jealous of how much everyone adores the sparky mouse, to the point that they wear a homemade costume which vaguely resembles Ash Ketchum's ride or die.
While this would be extremely creepy coming from a human character, it's hard to be anything but charmed by the adorable Mimikyu, even if it looks like something out of Trick 'r Treat.Jealous much?
