The Most Powerful Master/Apprentice Duos In The 'Star Wars' Universe

Updated February 10, 2021 949 votes 132 voters 10.6k views16 items

List RulesVote up the 'Star Wars' duos that prove two heads are better than one.

There are the evil and mysterious Sith Lords, training their apprentices (who are secretly training their own apprentices). Then, there are the noble Jedi Knights of the Republic, who train their pupils to meet the High Council's rigid standards. Then, there are the Jedi who train students in times of conflict and cram as much as possible into a matter of weeks before sending their unofficial Padawans into the fray. The master-apprentice duos in Star Wars come in all shapes and sizes.

A Force user can be powerful on their own, but they can be even stronger with a partner. There's no way that Plagueis or Palpatine could have taken over the galaxy without the help of the other, just like there's no way Anakin or Obi-Wan could have accomplished everything they did without each other. A good master and apprentice aren't just a teacher and a student; they are partners who perfectly fill in each other's shortcomings.

    Obi-Wan & Anakin

How Long Did They Last: Obi-Wan became Anakin's Jedi Master in The Phantom Menace and stayed with the boy until sometime after Attack of the Clones. This means that their training together was slightly longer than 10 years, although the two did continue to work closely together until Anakin left the Order in Revenge of the Sith

What Was The Dynamic: As Obi-Wan was a fairly young Jedi teacher, the two took on a brotherly relationship. Albeit, a brotherly relationship in which one brother was older and constantly passive-aggressive to the younger one.

Their Greatest Feats: Together, the two took on Count Dooku (twice), led clone armies to win countless skirmishes in The Clone Wars, rescued the Chancellor, defeated General Grievous, and discovered the creation of the Clone Army.

Their Biggest Weakness: It's hard not to wonder what it would be like if Qui-Gon Jinn had been Anakin's master. Sure, Obi-Wan Kenobi was an incredible Jedi, but he took on Anakin as his Padawan awfully young. A wiser, older, more willing to bend the rules Jedi like Qui-Gon might have known how to handle Anakin's brash nature. So, ultimately, their greatest weakness was that Obi-Wan, an inexperienced trainer, was trying to take on training the most difficult Jedi the Temple had ever seen.

    Palpatine & Vader

How Long Did They Last: Their relationship began on-screen in Revenge of the Sith and ended with Darth Vader slaying Palpatine in Return of the Jedi. Their apprenticeship lasted for 23 years. To put that into perspective, Anakin was only a Jedi for 13 years.

What Was The Dynamic: There was a time before Anakin was defeated by Obi-Wan where it seemed as if his relationship with Sidious might have been closer than Dooku's before him. But, after his great failure and his need for a robotic life-support system, their relationship ultimately became one-sided. Darth Vader traveled the galaxy enforcing his master's orders. He knew he wasn't powerful enough to take down Sidious, so he lived in fear of his master.

Their Greatest Feats: Together, they defeated the Jedi, took down the Republic, and ruled the galaxy for over two decades.

Their Biggest Weakness: Anakin Skywalker was a man fully controlled by his emotions. He only joined Palpatine because he was manipulated emotionally by the Sith Lord, and ultimately, he betrayed Palpatine under the same conditions. His love for his family was ultimately too strong, and he decided to save Luke just as he wished he could have saved Padme years before.

    Anakin & Ahsoka

Photo: Star Wars: The Clone Wars / Cartoon Network

How Long Did They Last: During the middle of the Clone Wars, Anakin was given a Padawan of his own in an attempt by the Jedi Council to teach him about letting go. By the time the Clone Wars came to an end, Ahsoka, said Padawan, had left the Order for good. The duo trained together for about two and a half years.

What Was The Dynamic: Due to Ahsoka's fun demeanor and Anakin's disregard for authority, the two were often more jokey and willing to break rules than other master/Padawan duos. The two were close in age, which added to their sibling-like dynamic. They often would turn their missions into competitions.

Their Greatest Feats: As the Chosen One and apprentice to the Chosen One, they naturally both played a big part in a lot of the Republic's wins in The Clone Wars. Anakin's great accomplishments in the conflict, like vanquishing Count Dooku and saving the chancellor, are so well known that they basically go without saying. Add in Ahsoka's accomplishments, like the safe return of Jabba's nephew and surviving countless fights with stronger opponents like Asajj Ventress and General Grievous - both of whom had taken out plenty of Jedi Knights - and they're two of the most decorated Jedi Generals in the war.

Their Biggest Weakness: Neither of these two liked to follow instructions. Early on in the conflict, during one of her first commands, Ahsoka refused to follow orders - resulting in the demise of her squadron. She was then reprimanded by the High Council and put on library duty. This lack of respect for authority was a pattern of behavior shown by both of them, and ultimately, most likely added to them both leaving the Order - albeit one peacefully and one through ruthlessness.

    Qui-Gon & Obi-Wan

Photo: Star Wars: The Phantom Menace / 20th Century Fox

How Long Did They Last: As Jedi, their relationship began normally. Obi-Wan came of age and was appointed a Jedi Master to train him. With that said, their relationship ended under anything but normal circumstances. After discovering the Chosen One and being beaten by a Sith, Qui-Gon was slain, and Obi-Wan was made a Jedi Knight.

What Was The Dynamic: During the events of The Phantom Menace, Obi-Wan behaved like an adult child still living at home. Obi-Wan was more by-the-books than his mentor, and the two often conflicted in how they felt situations should be handled. But ultimately, they cared for each other a great deal and had a very close relationship.

Their Greatest Feats: Together, they located the Chosen One, Anakin Skywalker, who was prophesied to bring balance to the Force. They also had the first encounter that the Jedi had with the Sith in hundreds of years.

Their Biggest Weakness: Like all Jedi in their era, they may have been a bit cocky. Going into a fight with a Sith without backup - while possibly a necessary decision they were forced into - was not really the best course of action. When Qui-Gon first met up with the Sith Assassin on Tatooine, they should have called in reinforcements from the Temple.
