Sure, everyone knows games like Call of Duty, Battlefield, and Counter-Strike are some of the most popular games of all time, but there are tons of other great (if not entirely overlooked) first-person shooter gems that are worthy of some serious praise. 

As one of the oldest (and most popular) video game genres, the first-person shooter (FPS) can actually be traced back to 1973 with a little game called Maze War. To date, there have been thousands of FPS games, and while some have been bona fide hits, others—whether due to poor timing, a lack of ports, or just bad luck—have seemingly fallen by the wayside.

Some of these underrated shooter games you may remember playing as a kid; others may have slipped your radar completely. If you’re tired of playing CoD and Halo and are looking for a great overlooked FPS game to get into, this list ranks all the best and most overlooked shooter games from the past few decades, including indie shooters and a bunch of overlooked Xbox 360 classics.     This shooter takes advantage of game mechanics that usually only exist in the sci-fi genre. You can use portals and gravity tracks to manipulate the environment and defeat your foes. Powered by the Doom 3 engine, this game is certainly worth a try.

    Bulletstorm offers exciting single-player and multiplayer experiences. Reminiscent of games like Gears of War, Bulletstorm allows the player to kill their enemies in several creative ways. It might not have sold as well as other titles, but you should still give it a try.

    Singularity adds time manipulation to the FPS genre. It's a welcome change to a genre that can often times get repetitive. Made by the same company that made Call of Duty, you don't need to worry about it lacking in mechanics or graphics.
