On August 16, 2018, Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul, died after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 76 years old.

Franklin passed away in her Detroit home surrounded by close friends and family. A few days prior to her death, media outlets reported Franklin was in hospice care

Lead vocalist for heavy metal band Huntress, Jill Janus, died on August 14, 2018 of an apparent suicide. She was 43. 

Joseph Maus


 

Joseph Maus, bandmate and brother of synth musician John Maus, died on July 28, 2018. He was on tour with his brother in Cesis, Latvia, at the time. No cause of death has been released. He was 30 years old. 

Their label, Ribbon Music, confirmed the death, saying "We offer our deepest and most sincere condolences to Joe's family, Robert Sue, Kevin, Stephanie, and John Maus, as well as his bandmates Luke and Jonathan, his friends, and all those suffering this tragic loss."

Multi-instrumentalist and producer Richard Swift passed away on July 3rd, 2018, at the age of 41 after a battle with a life-threatening illness. Swift reportedly fell ill in June, and a Facebook post confirmed his passing. It included the line “And all the angels sing ‘Que Sera Sera.’”

A prolific figure in the indie and alt-rock music scenes, Swift gigged with the Shins, the Black Keys, and the Arcs to name a few, along with producing pieces for acts such as Sharon Van Etten and Guster. Prior to those collaborations, Swift also self-produced three albums of his own.
