When Marvel announced Mysterio was going toe to toe with everyone’s favorite web head in the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel MCU fans scratched their collective noggins. Why not Doctor Octopus? Or even Kraven the Hunter? If you don’t read the comics then you don’t know who Mysterio is. But the villain of Spider-Man: Far From Home is actually a great choice for the MCU. Not only is he one of the first Spider-Man villains, he’s also just a regular guy who’s been beaten down by the world. And yes, he has a weird helmet that looks like a fishbowl.

If you take a cursory glance at the history of Marvel comics, it’s clear Mysterio runs through its genetic code. Aside from constantly trying to drive Spider-Man crazy, Mysterio’s traded blows with Daredevil, served with the Sinister Six, and he’s even the catalyst for one of the most groundbreaking Wolverine stories ever written. If you can’t wait for Far From Home, the strange life of Mysterio will get you even more excited to meet your new favorite villain.

As is the case with most of Spider-Man’s original villains, Mysterio is just a regular guy who’s angry at the world, and the wall-crawler specifically. In his original backstory Beck is a former stuntman and special effects designer who wants to make a name for himself via his technical prowess.

While Beck's adept enough at fighting, his biggest super power is his high intelligence. He’s essentially an evil version of Iron Man with less money, as he has an invention and illusion for everything.

The original members of the Sinister Six are Doc Oc, Sandman, Kraven the Hunter, Electro, Vulture, and Mysterio; they got together after suffering loss after loss to Spider-Man. While Mysterio isn’t the group’s leader by a long shot, he’s the member who saw a unique branding opportunity and gave the crew their catchy name.

Sony tried to make a Sinister Six movie for a while, but as of 2019 the idea is still up in the air. However, Vulture and Electro are both in Spider-Man: Homecoming and Far From Home, so anything could happen.

Mysterio’s most impressive power is his ability to create realistic illusions that distract people while he commits crimes. This is a villain who doesn’t want to get his hands dirty, so he uses trickery to get what he wants - be it money, power, or victory over his enemies.

Look for Mysterio to have some kind of CGI trickery or maybe even prosthetics in Far From Home. Whatever he ends up using, he definitely won’t be trying to get into a physical altercation with Peter Parker.

While Mysterio is one of Spider-Man's oldest villains, he's also one of the goofiest members of the wall-crawler's rogues' gallery (he's right up there with Kraven the Hunter). When is a guy with a big fishbowl over his head and eyes on his chest not silly? When he's killing New York City's biggest crime boss. And when he's a robot.

Following the events of Ultimatum (when all the heroes of the Ultimate universe team up to fight Magneto), Mysterio goes up to Kingpin's lair and blasts him out a window. Instead of immediately becoming the city's new godfather he creates a ton of chaos. He later reveals he killed Kingpin so he could search his office for the Zodiac Key, an ankh that allows the user to control psionic energy and even travel to the future. This is the beginning of a weird section of Ultimate universe history
