The Second World War - a horrific global battle - spanned from 1939 to 1945, claimed many lives, and left irreparable destruction in its wake. As such, many pictures from that period are incredibly difficult to digest. Images of people and lands that didn't survive the turmoil are still taboo. However, as time passes, the earth evolves - refusing to let its grounds remain scarred forever.

The photographs in this list show war artifacts mostly sourced from the German Siege of Leningrad in Russia. Overcome by greenery in the Neva Bridgehead area, these relics from WWII are perhaps indicative of nature's response to human transgressions like war. A young tree grows right through a widened bullet hole in a fallen soldier's helmet, for example, possibly showing that with time, nature can ease even our most macabre wrongs. Maybe even more idyllically, nature can create something of tranquility in the midst of tragedy.

WWII changed the world for the worst but now the world, by way of nature, is fighting back.
