The Dallas Mavericks' Luka Dončić was named the 2018-19 NBA Rookie of the Year after averaging 21.2 points per game, 7.8 rebounds, and 6.0 assists for a Mavericks team that missed out on the playoffs. Dončić started 72 games and averaged 32.2 minutes in his first season in the league.
Along with Phoenix Suns center Deandre Ayton, who was the number one pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, Dončić, who won the EuroLeague Championship and MVP Award at 19, was among the best players in the rookie class from the start of the season. Other players in the conversation for Rookie of the Year when the season began were Trae Young, Marvin Bagley III, Mohamed Bamba, and Michael Porter Jr.
The three finalists for the 2018-19 Rookie of the Year award were the winner Luka Dončić, the Phoenix Suns' Deandre Ayton, and the Atlanta Hawks' Young.
