After a release schedule wrought with delays, Fox's New Mutants is finally going to hit theaters on August 28 (fingers crossed). To promote the movie, the cast and crew of the hybrid horror/superhero pic met up for a Comic-Con At Home virtual panel to answer questions, talk shop, and bring a gift to their fans.
Featuring writer/director Josh Boone, Charlie Heaton (Sam Guthrie/Cannonball), Anya Taylor-Joy (Illyana Rasputin/Magik), Blu Hunt (Danielle Moonstar/Mirage), Alice Braga (Dr. Cecilia Reyes), Henry Zaga (Roberto da Costa/Sunspot) and Maisie Williams (Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane), the cast and crew answered questions regarding the stalled superhero pic, as well as sharing insight into their roles and characters.
Director Josh Boone Has Been A Fan Of 'New Mutants' For Years
Josh Boone: "I just finished making Fault in our Stars for Fox and I knew that they had the X-men franchise. Ever since I was a kid, I loved this DemonBear saga...it mixed dark fantasy and horror with superhero comics, and I have never seen anything like this before.
I thought about it for years.
It was the merging of all those genres into something different."
Maisie Williams Was Eager To Return To Another Fictional World With A Massive Fanbase
Maisie Williams: "It was really exciting. I was thrilled to play someone like Rahne because I have always seen myself as more that character. She's very uncomfortable in her own skin. She wants to speak up, and wants to say what she feels but she is constantly treading lightly.
When I play Arya, I always have to command the room and be brave and strong, and that's kind of exhausting and I don't really feel like that.
It was really lovely to play someone like Rahne who is just sitting, watching, and listening. She comes to life when she is with Danny, but in the group she is quiet.
The whole X-Men fanbase have just been so incredible and welcoming. I guess this whole superhero world is just bonkers, but I clearly loved it before, so I'm back again. "
'Stranger Things' Star Charlie Heaton Relates To The Misfit Roles
Charlie Heaton: "I find that there is a strength in Sam and leadership qualities he might have. You can see where he is going. There is a real inner pain with Sam, and it was something to go off to give to my character.
What I liked is that it is a superhero film, but with real inner conflicts to go through as a character and grab hold of. "
Alice Braga Loved Her Role As The Mutant 'Wrangler'
Alice Braga: "They are my babies!
Wanted to understand what Josh wanted from this woman. She is trying to teach these mutants to control their powers and guide them.
As a fan, I was excited because I can see the details, the personalities, and nuances of each one of them.
It was a fun character to play."
