Some of the new romance anime of 2019 include the highly anticipated reboot of Fruits Basket, a shojo anime from 2001. This new version will cover the whole manga, which includes a ton of romantic tension and relationships. There are also projects by legendary directors like Makoto Shinkai and Shinichiro Watanabe to look forward to - while there's not much information about Weathering With You or Carole & Tuesday, it's clear from the directors alone that they'll be something special. There are also some more light-hearted shows, like Kaguya-sama: Love Is War, a comedy about two people who refuse to admit their feelings for one another.

Fuutarou Uesugi isn't interested in tutoring the Nakano quintuplets for romantic reasons. Actually, all he wants is to earn enough money so that he and his sister can eat a decent lunch once in a while. At first, romance seems completely out of the question - actually most of the girls seem like they totally hate him. But as the first episode makes clear, he's definitely going to marry one of them - it's just a matter of finding out who.

The Quintessential Quintuplets has a harem set-up, which means that Fuutarou develops some degree of a relationship with all five girls. Whether you find that fun or frustrating can help you decide whether this romance anime is right for you.

  • Hikari Tsutsui doesn't know how to talk to actual people, especially actual girls. Rather than deal with the embarrassment that comes with suffering through social interaction, he retreats into video games. One day, while cleaning the school pool as a punishment for lateness, he meets Iroha Igarashi, a girl with a bad reputation who he tries to avoid. To his surprise, Iroha is actually kind to him, unlike everyone else at their school. Little by little, the two begin to form a closer relationship. More about that relationship's progress will be revealed in the upcoming second season.

If you're already loving The Quintessential Quintuplets, you might also like We Never Learn, an upcoming anime with a similar premise. Through hard work and dedication, impoverished orphan Nariyuki Yuiga manages to win a full ride to university - on one condition. He has to tutor the two runners up, both of whom are terrible at one subject, and brilliant at another. The other thing they have in common is that they're both super cute girls. With a set-up like that, it's natural that there's going to be some romantic tension.
