The onset of the 2000s saw a rise in a new brand of American rock music. Called "New Weird America" music, as a whole, it's pretty difficult to pinpoint since inherently, all bands are weird. But for the sake of this list of new weird American bands, it should only include bands who have elements of psychedelic rock, freak folk and indie rock in their music. To music listeners, both casual and informed, this name sounds, well, weird. But, it's the only way to describe musicians of this new era of music. These bands are weird in the American sense of music, meaning that they sweet harmonies that are almost Beach Boys-esque. Overall, these "weird bands" and "weird artists" managed to carve out a nice niche for themselves within the indie rock and folk communities. 

So, who can be considered the best new weird American bands? For the sake of this list, we're only included the bands from the above mentioned definition. This list of new weird American bands includes the likes of Devandra Banhart, Panda Bear, Noe Venable and Panda Bear's main band, Animal Collective. Each of these artists are strange in their own respect, but the elements of freak folk and indie rock are what separates them from other bands that have been called weird. But this definition should narrow down exactly a new weird American band is.
