She was appointed by President Barack Obama, unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate, and assumed the Chairship on January 27, 2009. She is the first woman to be the permanent Chair of the SEC. In 2009, Forbes ranked her the 56th most powerful woman in the world.Schapiro served in various roles as a financial services regulator in the administrations of Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, and Bill Clinton. From 2006 to early 2009, she was the Chairman and CEO of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), the securities industry's self-regulatory organization for broker-dealers and exchanges in the United States.

A. Thomas McLellan

A. Thomas McLellan (born May 29, 1949, in Staten Island, New York) is the founder and Chairman of the Board of Directors at the Treatment Research Institute, a not-for-profit research and development institute in Philadelphia. He served as Deputy Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy from 2009 to 2012.
McLellan received his B.A. from Colgate University and his M.S. and Ph.D. from Bryn Mawr College. He received postgraduate training in psychology at Oxford University.  He has since worked for the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania.
McLellan was the principal developer of the Addiction Severity Index (ASI) and the Treatment Services Review (TSR), widely used substance abuse instruments.  He has served as an adviser to many government and nonprofit scientific organizations, including the Office of National Drug Control Policy, the National Practice Laboratory of the American Psychiatric Association, the Swiss National Science Foundation, the World Health Organization, the Greek government and Public Health England.
McLellan served as the Deputy Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy under the Obama administration.Among McLellan’s many honors and awards are the Life Achievement Award of the American Society of Addiction Medicine in 2003 and the 2002 award for Distinguished Contribution in Addiction Medicine from the Swedish Medical Association.  He has served as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment.

Abijah Gilbert

Abijah Gilbert (June 18, 1806 – November 23, 1881) was a United States Senator from Florida.
Born in Gilbertsville, New York, Gilbert attended Gilbertsville Academy and entered Hamilton College (in Clinton, New York) in 1822 as a member of the class of 1826, but did not return the following year.  He spent 1822 to 1850 engaged in mercantile pursuits in New York City before moving to St. Augustine, Florida in 1865.
An early advocate of abolitionism, Gilbert was a strong supporter of the Whig Party and, later on, the Republican Party.  He was elected to represent Florida in the United States Senate as a Republican, and served from 1869 to 1875 as part of the Reconstruction effort. During that period of time, he missed 40.4% of roll call votes.Gilbert retired from business and political life after his Senate term ended while continuing to live in St. Augustine.  He moved back to Gilbertsville shortly before his death in 1881. He is buried in Brookside Cemetery in Gilbertsville.

Abraham Curry

Abraham (or Abram or Abe) Van Santvoord Curry (February 19, 1815  October 19, 1873) is considered the founding father of Carson City, Nevada. A native of the state of New York, he traveled to the West Coast during the California Gold Rush and settled in Nevada's Eagle Valley, where Carson City was established.Curry served as an assemblyman of the Nevada Territorial Legislature from 1862 to 1863 and was a territorial senator from 1863 to 1864. He was also the first superintendent of the Carson City Mint and the first warden of Nevada State Prison. Curry donated 10 acres (4.0 ha) of land for the site of the Nevada State Capitol, for which the state prison quarry provided the stone for its construction.Curry spent the final years of his life building facilities for the Virginia and Truckee Railroad in Carson City. Though he had achieved prominence in Nevada, his wife claimed that he had only one dollar in his pocket when he died in 1873.

Abraham H. Schenck

Abraham Henry Schenck (January 22, 1775 – June 1, 1831) was a U.S. Representative from New York. He was an uncle to Isaac Teller, who also became a representative from New York.
Born in Matteawan, New York, Schenck received an English education. He became engaged in the manufacture of machinery. He served as member of the New York State Assembly from 1804-1806.
Schenck was elected as a Democratic-Republican to the Fourteenth Congress (March 4, 1815 – March 3, 1817). He engaged in the manufacture of cotton goods. He died in Fishkill, New York, June 1, 1831, and was interred in the Dutch Reform Churchyard, Beacon (formerly Fishkill Landing), New York.

Abraham P. Grant

Abraham Phineas Grant (April 5, 1804 – December 11, 1871) was a U.S. Representative from New York.
Born in New Lebanon, New York, Grant attended the public schools and graduated from Hamilton College, Clinton, New York.  He then studied law, and was admitted to the bar in 1828.  He commenced practice in Oswego, New York, and served as district attorney of Oswego County in 1835.
Grant was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-fifth Congress (March 4, 1837 – March 3, 1839).  He resumed the practice of law.  He died in Oswego, New York, December 11, 1871.  He was interred in Riverside Cemetery.

Jose Peralta

José Rafael Peralta (November 10, 1971 – November 21, 2018) was an American politician who served in the New York State Assembly and New York State Senate. A member of the Democratic Party, he last represented District 13 in the State Senate, which includes the Queens neighborhoods of Corona, East Elmhurst, Elmhurst, Jackson Heights, and Woodside. He previously represented District 39 in the New York State Assembly, which is located in Queens, New York and includes Corona, Elmhurst and Jackson Heights. He was elected to the New York State Senate in a landslide on March 16, 2010. Peralta was a member of the Independent Democratic Conference (IDC), a group of Democratic senators who allied themselves with Senate Republicans. He was re-elected in 2012, 2014 and 2016, but was defeated in the 2018 Democratic primary.
Peralta died of leukemia at the age of 47 on November 21, 2018.

Abram Hewitt

Abram Stevens Hewitt (July 31, 1822 – January 18, 1903) was an American teacher, lawyer, an iron manufacturer, chairman of the Democratic National Committee from 1876 to 1877, U.S. Congressman, and a mayor of New York City. He was the son-in-law of Peter Cooper (1791–1883), an industrialist, inventor and philanthropist. He is best known for his work with the Cooper Union, which he aided Peter Cooper in founding in 1859, and for planning the financing and construction of the first subway line of the New York City Subway, for which he is considered the "Father of the New York City Subway System".
