The 2016 Oscar Nominations generated a lot of controversy. While the actors and actresses nominated for Academy Awards played a wide range of different characters, it’s hard not to notice what all the nominees had in common. Every actor nominated for a 2016 Academy Award ws white. While Hollywood does have an overall diversity problem, there was no shortage of Oscar-worthy performances from non-white actors. This list of non-white actors the Oscars overlooked proves there’s no reason the Oscar nominations should be as white as they are.
Idris Elba not being nominated for Best Supporting Actor was seen by many as one of the biggest snubs of the 2016 Oscar nominations. His role in Beasts of No Nation was critically acclaimed, as was the performance by his young co-star, Abraham Attah. Alba wasn’t the only black star who was overlooked. Will Smith and Samuel L. Jackson, two of the world’s biggest actors, were also overlooked for their roles in Concussion and The Hateful Eight, respectively.
While Sylvester Stallone was nominated for Creed, his costar, Michael B. Jordan, was snubbed. The white screenwriters of Straight Outta Compton were nominated, but the excellent ensemble, led by Jason Mitchell, were all left out.
While not every great actor or actress can be nominated, it still seems shocking that these actors were overlooked. Did your favorite fail to make the cut? Add them to this list and vote up the others you think were the best actors the 2016 Oscars overlooked.
