13 'Ocarina of Time' Fan Theories That Are Total Game Changers

For many fans of the Legend of Zelda series, it doesn't get much better than Ocarina of Time. OoT took what people had already fallen in love within the previous games and expanded on them, while creating a totally new gameplay experience in Nintendo 64's revolutionary platform. Because of the love and admiration (as well as over twenty years to speculate) some absolutely incredible fan theories have emerged about OoT. Some of them are incredibly in-depth, focusing on the long, torrid history of Hyrule - creating backstories about civil war, the history of the Kokiri, and even Link's relationships with other beloved characters like Saria. Others focus on minute details of the game, including an explanation for all the clay pots in Hyrule, and how Sheik has been pulling a "magic trick" on Link all along.

Whether you're a dedicated fan or a casual player, we want you to vote on these incredible Ocarina of Time fan theories. Vote up your favorites and check back to see which Ocarina of Time fan theory reaches the top of the list!

    Link Is The Hero's Spirit

While this archived theory doesn't actually provide any further explanation by the poster, Redditor /u/ryanoh used the title "The Hero's Spirit from Twilight Princess is Link from Ocarina of Time/Majora's Mask" alongside the accompanied image to share this idea. Interestingly, commentors in the thread have not only confirmed that this is a well-established concept, but that it was eventually proven in the book The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia

See? Keep speculating, because some theories actually become true!

    Sheik's Deku Nut "Disappearances"

Redditor /u/MyOtherCarIsEpona self-describes this theory as "very minor" in the title of the original post, but there's definitely some significance to it. The Redditor points out that whenever Link encounters Sheik, the song-giver exits by throwing a Deku nut and disappearing with a flash. But is it really a flash? Considering that Link's enemies are stunned by the Deku nut, it's fair to assume the same would happen to Link. So when when Sheik uses the item and "suddenly disappers," it's actually several seconds - plenty of time for him to simply walk away without having to "vanish." Sneaky move, Sheik.

The Remains Of "The Great War"

One of the most frequently recurring topics of OoT fan theories are the temples. What are they? Where did they come from? If you ask Redditor /u/Sully9989, they are the remnants of a great, realm-wide war. The various temples actually held specific purposes during a time of tremendous strife in Hyrule. The Shadow Temple (which is the only time "Hyrule's bloody history" is mentioned) is essentially just catacombs, most likely used for the dead of "The Great War." The Redditor goes on to explain the purposes of each temple in detail, each of which has compelling and researched ideas.

    Saria And Link's Relationship

Right from the beginning of OoT, it's established that Link has a history with Saria. With a little bit of digging and speculation, it's possible to conclude that their relationship goes much deeper than what the game reveals. A past romance, perhaps? That's what Redditor /u/mybustersword seems to think. They point out a few things. For one, Saria hand crafts all her gifts to Link, which most of us can probably agree is usually done for very special people in one's life. Also, she asks Link to always remember her. And he does. Link carries "Saria's Song" with him wherever he goes. Sounds like love to us.

Hylians Used To Inhabit All The Temples

The seven temples of OoT have plainly distinctive characteristics, which make them them ideal dwellings for their specific inhabitants. The Gorons, for example, are able to live near the Fire Temple because they can withstand the heat.

However, Redditor /u/ThePurpleGhost proposes that this wasn't always the case. Their theory states that all the temples were once occupied by Hylians, who used them for various practices of worship. At some point, though, fearing that the they might use their vast reach to gain power over the sacred realm, the other races droves the Hylians out and desecrated the temples.

    Navi's Fate

In Link's conclusive battle with Ganondorf, Navi comes to his aid. However, in the first section of the fight, Navi is unable to help because of the evil waves the big boss omits. It's only after Link hits him with the Arrow of Light that Navi is able to step in, saying that she won't be stopped this time. Redditor /u/HelpMeFindMyPenguins thinks this is Navi's final act of bravery. This theory suggests that fighting Ganondorf takes such a tremendous toll on her body that she dies soon after, which is why she leaves following Link returning the Master Sword.
