Hosting the Olympics almost always backfires. It sounds glamorous, but in reality, it's anything but. Cities build massive arenas and hotels just to accommodate the events and athletes&nbsp;and then have virtually nothing to use them for after the games hit the road.&nbsp;As a result, the world is positively littered with abandoned Olympics venues. From Sarajevo to Athens, most places just can't handle the Olympics.Start to finish, host cities run inevitably run into problem after problem. One of the biggest problems is almost always infrastructure. Hosting the Olympics requires several venues and arenas, pretty much all of which need to be new or at least newly renovated.Of course, after the Olympics are over, there's really no more need for said venues. Some continue to get used for various purposes, but many inevitably fall into a state of disrepair. The specialty sites, in particular,&nbsp;the ones built for things like bobsledding and other less popular sports, are usually the first to go. In the end, the upkeep on old Olympic sites just hasn't been worth it for most past host cities. There are ghost sites from previous Olympics all over the world. Here are some of the creepiest.

As a former collegiate softball player, I was one of many saddened to see the sport excised from the Olympics in recent years. This, however, is not a <a class="edS-cl" href="https://www.ranker.com/list/best-fictional-sports-coaches/ranker-entertainment?ref=internalCrossLinking_keyword">list of sports</a> we would really want to see on broadcast TV... as part of the Olympics, anyway. LeBron James

LeBron Raymone James Sr. (; born December 30, 1984) is an American professional basketball player for the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). His accomplishments include three NBA championships, four NBA Most Valuable Player Awards, three NBA Finals MVP Awards, and two Olympic gold medals. James has appeared in fifteen NBA All-Star Games and been named NBA All-Star MVP three times. He won the 2008 NBA scoring title, is the all-time NBA playoffs scoring leader, and is fourth in all-time career points scored. He has been voted onto the All-NBA First Team twelve times and the All-Defensive First Team five times. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest basketball players of all time.James played basketball for St. Vincent–St. Mary High School in his hometown of Akron, Ohio, where he was heavily touted by the national media as a future NBA superstar. A prep-to-pro, he joined the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2003 as the first overall draft pick. Named the 2003–04 NBA Rookie of the Year, he soon established himself as one of the league's premier players; he won the NBA Most Valuable Player Award in 2009 and 2010. After failing to win a championship with Cleveland, James left in 2010 to sign as a free agent with the Miami Heat. This move was announced in an ESPN special titled The Decision, and is one of the most controversial free agent decisions in American sports history.
James won his first two NBA championships while playing for the Miami Heat in 2012 and 2013; in both of these years, he also earned league MVP and Finals MVP. After his fourth season with the Heat in 2014, James opted out of his contract to re-sign with the Cavaliers. In 2016, he led the Cavaliers to victory over the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals, delivering the franchise's first championship and ending Cleveland's 52-year professional sports title drought. His teams appeared in the NBA Finals in eight consecutive seasons (from 2011 to 2018). In 2018, James opted out of his contract with the Cavaliers to sign with the Lakers.
Off the court, James has accumulated additional wealth and fame from numerous endorsement contracts. His public life has been the subject of much scrutiny, and he has been ranked as one of America's most influential and popular athletes. He has been featured in books, documentaries, and television commercials. He has also hosted the ESPY Awards and Saturday Night Live, and appeared in the 2015 film Trainwreck.

Redmond Gerard

Redmond "Red" Gerard (born June 29, 2000) is an American snowboarder. Gerard was born and raised in Ohio, but currently lives in Silverthorne, Colorado. Gerard competed in the slopestyle and big air events for the United States at the 2018 Winter Olympics. In slopestyle, Gerard won the gold medal for his performance. He became the first Winter Olympics medalist born in the 2000s. Gerard was also the first American gold medalist in the 2018 Winter Olympics, and the youngest American to medal in a snowboarding event at the Olympics.

Alfred George Kruger III

Alfred George Kruger III (born 18 February 1979) is a male hammer thrower from the United States. His personal best is 79.26 metres, achieved in August 2004 in Berea.
He finished fourth at the 2006 IAAF World Cup. In addition, he competed at the 2004 Olympic Games, the 2005 World Championships, the 2007 World Championships, the 2008 Olympic Games, the 2009 World Championships, the 2012 Olympic Games and the 2013 World Championships without reaching the final.
He is from the same home town, Sheldon, Iowa, as Olympic gold medalist and University of Iowa wrestling coach Tom Brands. Kruger attended Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa where he was a Division II student-athlete in both football and track and field. AG is the youngest child of Al and Linda Kruger. AG married his wife Laura in the fall of 2007. The two had their first child, a son, Alfred George Kruger IV in August 2011.

Alvin Robertson

Alvin Cyrrale Robertson (born July 22, 1962) is an American retired basketball player who played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1984 to 1993, and for one final season in 1995–96. Robertson holds the record for the most steals per game played, averaging 2.71 steals per game for his career. He is also one of four players in NBA history to have recorded a quadruple-double.

Amanda Borden

Amanda Kathleen Borden (born May 10, 1977) is a retired American gymnast. She was the captain of the gold medal-winning United States team in the 1996 Summer Olympics, the Magnificent Seven; a team medalist at the World Championships, and a multiple medalist at the 1995 Pan American Games. Borden was known for her clean form and technique, as well as her vivacious, encouraging presence.

Andy Hrovat

Andy Hrovat (born January 21, 1980) is an American wrestler who specializes in freestyle wrestling.  He was a 3-time NCAA All-American and wrestled in the 2008 Olympic Games.

Barry Larkin

Barry Louis Larkin (born April 28, 1964) is a retired Major League Baseball (MLB) player who played shortstop for the Cincinnati Reds from 1986 to 2004.
Born and raised in Cincinnati, Larkin attended the University of Michigan, where he played college baseball. He briefly played in the minor leagues before making his MLB debut in 1986. He quickly won the starting shortstop role for the Reds and enjoyed a long run of strong seasons with the team. Larkin struggled with a string of injuries between 1997 and 2003, limiting his playing time in several seasons.
Larkin retired after the 2004 season and worked in a front office position for the Washington Nationals for several years until he joined ESPN as a baseball analyst. He served as a coach for the American team in the 2009 World Baseball Classic and managed the Brazilian national team in the qualifiers for the same event in 2013.
Larkin is considered one of the top players of his era, winning nine Silver Slugger awards, three Gold Glove awards, and the 1995 National League Most Valuable Player Award. He was selected to the Major League All-Star Game twelve times, and was one of the pivotal players on the 1990 Reds' World Series championship team. Larkin was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in January 2012 and was inducted on July 22, 2012.

Bill Hosket, Jr.

Wilmer Frederick Hosket (born December 20, 1946) is an American former professional basketball player.
A 6'8" forward/center, Hosket played basketball at Belmont High School (Dayton, Ohio) in Dayton, Ohio, where he won an Ohio state championship in 1964. He was named Ohio Player of the Year and was also MVP of the state tournament.He played college basketball at the Ohio State University from 1965 to 1968.  He led his Ohio State team in scoring and rebounding during each of his three varsity seasons and was named to three All Big Ten Conference Academic First Teams. In fall 1968, he competed at the Summer Olympics, winning a gold medal with the United States national basketball team.Hosket then played four seasons (1968–1972) in the National Basketball Association as a member of the Buffalo Braves and New York Knicks. He averaged 4.0 points per game in his career and won a league championship with the Knicks in 1970.After retiring as a player, Hosket served on three United States Olympic Basketball Committees. He also founded Buckeye Basketball Camp (not officially affiliated with Ohio State University) in his home state of Ohio.In 1998, Hosket was named as the President of the OHSAA Foundation and served as the foundation's first executive director. He is a principal at Hosket & Ulen, an independent insurance agency. Hosket and his wife, Patty, have three grown sons (all graduates of Ohio State) and reside in Columbus.Hosket's father, Bill Hosket, Sr., and his son, Brad Hosket, also played basketball at Ohio State.Hosket is a member of the Ohio State Hall of Fame and was named in 1993 to the National Association of Basketball Coaches Silver Anniversary team. He was honored in 2002 by the Ohio High School Athletic Association with its highest honor – the Ethics and Integrity Award. In 2006, he was inducted into the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame.

Brad Friedel

Bradley Howard Friedel (born May 18, 1971) is a retired American soccer goalkeeper and the former head coach of Major League Soccer team New England Revolution.Friedel played 84 games for the United States national team between 1992 and 2005, and represented his country at three FIFA World Cup tournaments. He is the current holder of the Premier League record for most consecutive appearances with 310, a feat he achieved during spells at Blackburn Rovers, Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur. Until he was left out of the Tottenham team on October 7, 2012, the last Premier League games Friedel missed were Blackburn's final two fixtures of the 2003–04 season against Tottenham and Birmingham City, on May 10 and May 15, 2004, respectively.
Friedel is also officially Aston Villa's oldest-ever player, a record he set on February 1, 2011, by playing in the club's Premier League fixture away at Manchester United. Friedel's age of 39 years and 259 days surpassed the previous record held by Ernie Callaghan, who last played for Villa against Grimsby Town in April 1947, aged 39 years and 257 days. Friedel's last appearance for Villa was on May 22, 2011, in a 1–0 home win against Liverpool, aged 40 years and four days.On May 6, 2012, Friedel also became the oldest player to appear in a competitive match for Tottenham when he played in the club's Premier League fixture at Aston Villa, beating Jimmy Cantrell's near-80-year-old record.

Brianne McLaughlin

Brianne Lea McLaughlin (born June 20, 1987) is an American ice hockey goaltender. She is a member of the United States women's national ice hockey team. She plays for the Buffalo Beauts of the National Women's Hockey League (NWHL).

Alex Groza

Alex John Groza (October 7, 1926 – January 21, 1995) was an American professional basketball player from Martins Ferry, Ohio who was banned from the National Basketball Association (NBA) for life in 1951 for point shaving.   This scandal was the CCNY point shaving scandal. He had an outstanding college career at the University of Kentucky and was a two-time All-NBA player for the Indianapolis Olympians before his career came to an abrupt end.

Bridget Sloan

Bridget Elizabeth Sloan (born June 23, 1992) is an American artistic gymnast. She is the 2009 world champion in the all-around, the 2009 United States national champion, and a silver medalist with the American team at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.
From 2012 to 2016, Sloan was a member of the University of Florida women's gymnastics team, which has won three consecutive NCAA National Championships titles. She is also the 2013 NCAA national champion in the all-around and on the balance beam, and the 2014 NCAA champion on the uneven bars. In 2015, she became the first University of Florida gymnast, and the seventh NCAA gymnast, to score a perfect 10 on each of the four events. At the 2016 NCAA Nationals, her final championship, she won the all-around, uneven bars, and balance beam titles.

Bryan Volpenhein

Bryan Volpenhein (born August 18, 1976), is an American rower. He is a three-time Olympian, having participated in the 2000, 2004 and 2008 Summer Olympics.
Originally from Cincinnati, Volpenhein graduated from Kings High School in Kings Mills, Ohio and attended The Ohio State University, where he rowed for The Ohio State University Crew Club alongside coach John Gutrich; former Purdue lightweight rower, and coached by Lou Renzulli. He graduated in 2002. Following the 2005 World Rowing Championships, he studied culinary arts at The Art Institute of Seattle. Volpenhein is the only two-time winner (in 2002 and 2004) of the USRowing Male Athlete of the Year award. In addition, he and his team were named "USATODAY.com's U.S. Olympic Athlete of the Week" following their gold medal win in 2004. Volpenhein won bronze in the men's eight at the 2008 Olympics.

Butch Reynolds

Harry "Butch" Reynolds (born June 8, 1964) is an American former track and field athlete who competed in the 400 meter dash. He held the world record for the event for 11 years with his personal best time of 43.29 seconds set in 1988. That year, he was the silver medalist at the 1988 Seoul Olympics (behind Steve Lewis) and a relay gold medalist. He was banned for drug use for two years by the IAAF, following an unsuccessful legal appeal.
On his competitive return he became the 1993 World Indoor Champion and won two successive 400 meter silver medals at the World Championships in Athletics. He also enjoyed success with the 4×400 meter relay team, winning the world title three times in his career with the United States (1987, 1993 and 1995). His team's time of 2:54.29 minutes at the 1993 World Championships in Athletics is the current world record. Reynolds remains the third fastest of all-time in the 400 m after Michael Johnson, the former world record holder, and Wayde van Niekerk, the current world record holder.
In 2016, he was elected into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame.

Charles Daniels

Charles Meldrum Daniels (March 24, 1885 – August 9, 1973) was an American competition swimmer, eight-time Olympic medalist, and world record-holder in two freestyle swimming events.  Daniels was an innovator of the front crawl swimming style, inventing the "American crawl".Daniels began his swimming career with the New York Athletic Club in 1903.  At the 1904 Olympics in St. Louis, Missouri, Daniels became the first American to win an Olympic medal, winning gold medals in both the 220- and 440-yard freestyle races. Four years later, at the 1908 Olympics in London, Daniels won gold in the 100-meter freestyle.
Daniels was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame as an "Honor Swimmer" in 1965.

Charles Vinci

Charles Thomas Vinci Jr. (February 28, 1933 – June 13, 2018) was an American weightlifter and Olympic champion.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Vinci was the United States Senior National Champion from 1954 to 1956 and from 1958 to 1961. He received silver medals in the 1955 and 1958 world championships. He won gold medals at the 1955 and 1959 Pan American games. He won a gold medal at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, with a world-record three-lift (snatch, clean and jerk, overhead press) total of 342.5 kilograms (755.1 lb). Just prior to weighing-in, Vinci was 1.5 pounds overweight. After an hour of running and sweating, he was still seven ounces over the limit, but a severe last-minute haircut saw him make the weight limit. He won gold again at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome.During his career, Vinci set 12 world records in the bantamweight class, between 1955 and 1960. He held records in snatch, in clean and jerk and in press, as well as in total (3).

Clarence Childs

Clarence Chester Childs (July 24, 1883 – September 16, 1960) was an American athlete who competed mainly in the hammer throw.  He served as the head football coach at Indiana University from 1914 to 1915, compiling a record of 6–7–1.

Darrell Pace

Darrell Owen Pace (born October 23, 1956) is a former archer from the United States, who won two individual Olympic and World Championships titles each during his career. In 2011, he was declared as the Men's archer for 20th century by the International Archery Federation (FITA).

Dave Laut

David ("Dave") Lester Laut (December 21, 1956 – August 27, 2009) was an American shot putter. He was born in Findlay, Ohio and grew up in Oxnard, California. Laut attended Art Haycox Elementary School, E. O. Green Junior High School, Santa Clara High School, Moorpark College (all in Ventura County), along with San Jose City College and UCLA, where he was a two-time NCAA champion and ranked No. 1 shot putter in the United States.

Dave Wottle

David James Wottle (born August 7, 1950) is an American retired middle-distance track athlete. He was the gold medalist in the 800 meter run at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. He was known for wearing a golf cap while running.

David Jenkins

David Wilkinson Jenkins (born June 29, 1936) is an American former figure skater. He is the 1960 Olympic champion, the 1956 Olympic bronze medalist, a three-time World champion, and a four-time U.S. national champion.

David Mark Berger

David Mark Berger (May 24, 1944 – September 6, 1972) was an American and Israeli Olympic weightlifter, and one of the eleven Israeli Olympians taken hostage and killed by the Palestinian group Black September during the Munich massacre at the 1972 Summer Olympics. Born and raised in the United States, Berger was a lawyer by education and had emigrated to Israel after taking part in the 1969 Maccabiah Games.

David Payne

David Thorn Payne (born July 24, 1982) is an American hurdler. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and his family moved to the suburb of Wyoming. Payne competed in the 110 and 400 meter hurdles while attending the University of Cincinnati.  While at UC, Payne won multiple individual titles in Conference USA and was named Conference USA Outdoor Athlete of the Year while guiding the Bearcats to the C-USA 2004 outdoor title.  He set school records for both distances and was a two time NCAA All-American in the 110m hurdles.  Payne now resides in Northern Kentucky and trains in Cincinnati, Ohio.
In 2007 he won the silver medal at the Pan American Games behind Dayron Robles, and the bronze medal at the 2007 World Championships, the latter in a personal best time of 13.02 seconds.  This feat was especially surprising since Payne was filling in, as an alternate, for the injured American record holder, Dominique Arnold, and had only arrived in Japan from the U.S. less than 24 hours before he was to race.

Payne grabbed the final qualifying spot for the Beijing Olympics at the 2008 Outdoor National Championships.  At the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China, Payne continued his ascent in the track and field world and won a Silver Medal in the 110m hurdles in a season best time of 13.17 seconds. World record holder Dayron Robles, of Cuba, won the gold.
In 2009, after sitting out most of the indoor season, Payne returned to Olympic form during the outdoor season capturing the 2009 USATF National Championship in the 110m hurdles, a feat which qualified him for the 2009 World Championships in Berlin, Germany.  In a photo finish, Payne edged out fellow 2008 Olympian, 2007 World Silver Medalist, and former 110m hurdle National Champion Terrence Trammell by .003 of a second with a winning time of 13.115.  Again, Payne surprised many by overtaking Trammell in the final steps although Trammell led coming off the final hurdle and was thought by the announcers to have won.

Doug Mientkiewicz

Douglas Andrew Mientkiewicz ( mint-KAY-vitch; born June 19, 1974) is an American retired professional baseball first baseman, and current manager for the Toledo Mud Hens. He batted left-handed and threw right-handed. He is one of five American players to win both an Olympic gold medal and a World Series championship which he won with the Boston Red Sox in 2004 over the St. Louis Cardinals.
