Garp Being Revealed As Luffy's Grandfather Happens Sooner
The Straw Hats were caught completely off-guard when Luffy calls Garp his grandfather at the end of Episode 4 - and so were we. Although most fans are well aware that the Marine vice admiral is Luffy's grandpa, that reveal comes much later in the original series.
For reference, Garp doesn't even encounter the Straw Hats until Chapter 431 of the manga, and the live-action adaption only covers the main plot points up to Chapter 96.
Along with Arlong appearing much earlier, his alliance with Buggy is a huge change from the original anime. Arlong uses Buggy to locate Luffy at the Baratie to ambush him, but in the anime, the two antagonists don't show up at the restaurant at all.
Their collaboration is a stark difference from the source material, but seeing these two interact was definitely something fun for the fans.
Merry's death at the hands of Kuro is why Luffy decides to name the Straw Hats' ship the Going Merry in the live-action, but that tragedy doesn't exist in the anime. Merry manages to survive the Black Cat Pirates' attack and is seen as a helping hand to Kaya later on in the series.
Arlong is introduced to the Straw Hats during their time at the Baratie, but in the anime it's a different pirate they face. Don Krieg is the original antagonist of the Baratie Arc after he attempts to take over the restaurant.
It's assumed that for the sake of pacing, Netflix opted to put Arlong in his place and only give Don Krieg a small cameo when he is taken down by Dracule Mihawk the episode before.
In the live-action adaptation, Nami is introduced fairly quickly to the audience and meets Luffy during Episode 1 at Shells Town. Together, the two of them manage to steal the map of the Grand Line and take off on an adventure with Zoro.
In the anime, Zoro is the only new friend Luffy makes during his time in Shells Town. Nami meets the two of them later on in Orange Town when they run into the clown pirate Buggy.
Netflix stayed relatively true to the original anime storyline between Kaya and Usopp. But the biggest change is arguably the kiss scene in Episode 4, officially making the romance between these two canon to the series.
Although it had been hinted in the original source material, this is the first time a romantic relationship has been explicitly confirmed for two people in One Piece.
