They even cast Patronuses that can communicate messages, such as when Kingsley Shacklebolt sends his Patronus (a lynx) to deliver a warning during Bill Weasley and Fleur Delacour's wedding in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: "The Ministry has fallen. [Minister of Magic] Scrimgeour is dead. They [Voldemort's followers] are coming.”

The Order of the Phoenix relied heavily on Albus Dumbledore for leadership, but the group followed a chain of command. After Dumbledore's demise, Mad-Eye Moody became the leader. His stint lasted only a month, however, because he was slain by Voldemort when the Order flew Harry from the Dursleys' home to the Weasleys'.

Aberforth's role in the Order is to provide information to his brother that he overhears at the inn, known to attract wizards of all kinds.
