"Oz The Great and Powerful" movie quotes put a new twist on the beloved tale of "The Wizard of Oz" with a prequel of sorts. Released by Disney on March 8, 2013, in 2D and 3D, "Oz The Great and Powerful" tells the story of the wizard's rise to fame in the events before Dorothy Gale ever landed in the mysterious land. Sam Raimi directed the film based on a screenplay by Mitchell Kapner and David Lindsay-Abaire.
In "Oz The Great and Powerful," Oscar Diggs (James Franco) is a lowly magician in a small town of Kansas. He desires to do something more with his life and sets out in his hot air balloon looking for greener pastures. A twister however takes hold of his balloon and transports him to a colorful and mysterious new land.
When he wakes, Oscar meets Theodora (Mila Kunis) and soon learns that he is in Oz, which also happens to be his nickname, and that they've been waiting for a wizard to arrive. Theodora introduces Oscar to her sister Evandora (Rachel Weisz) and while Evandora has her doubts that Oscar is in fact their wizard, she explains that the wizard must defeat the wicked witch in order to save everyone in Oz. He's then introduced to Glinda (Michelle Williams), the good witch, who provides him with the confidence, plus an "army" of munchkins, to help him in his epic battle.
Oscar Diggs: "Kansas is full of good men. I don't want to be a good man. I want to be a great one."
Like Dorothy, Oscar Diggs wants to do more with his life than what is available to him in Kansas. Also like Dorothy, he didn't imagine where the twister that hit his small town would send him and what adventures would await.
Evanora: "You are here at last and the prophecy shall be fulfilled. The royal treasure of Oz, it belongs to you, but only after you defeat the wicked witch."
Evandora lays out the terms of the prophecy, that the wizard must slay the wicked witch in order to save the land. Can't be too hard of a job, right?
Oscar Diggs: "Am I dreaming?"
Theodora: "You're in Oz."
Oscar Diggs: "That's my name. Everyone calls me Oz."
As if it's not weird enough that his balloon was swept away by the twister to take him to a strange land filled with color, learning that this new place is named the same thing he is turns out to be quite the coincidence.
Theodora: "Are you the great man we've been waiting for?"
Oscar Diggs: "I think I could be."
Theodora explains that they've been waiting for a wizard to save them and asks if Oscar Diggs is that man. While he doesn't know quite yet what he's signing up for, he says that he is in fact that man.
Theodora: "I am Theodora, the good witch."
Oscar Diggs: "Where's your broom?"
Theodora: "You don't know much about witches, do you?"
Before now, Oscar's idea of witches involved a black hat and a broomstick but as Theodora explains, he is about to learn about a whole different type of witches.
Oscar Diggs: "I might not actually be a wizard."
Glinda: "Yes, but they don't know that."
Glinda briefs Oscar before introducing him to the people of Munchkin Land. While he might not be a real wizard, his success relies on him believing he actually is.
