21 Grim Pictures From The Aftermath Of Pearl Harbor

Tragedy struck the United States in the early morning of December 7, 1941. Japan's surprise strike on Pearl Harbor, a naval base in Hawaii, was a preemptive measure meant to dissuade America from interfering with its empire expansion in Southeast Asia. The devastating strike resulted in over 2,000 casualties, 12 destroyed ships, and 160 demolished aircraft in just under two hours.

A call to arms swiftly followed - the US joined WWII. While the conflict led to unparalleled American patriotism, it also resulted in egregious civil rights violations faced by Japanese-Americans, forced to either relocate or face internment.

Gathered below are photographs of the aftermath of the conflict that thrust America into action, immortalized by the words, "a date which will live in infamy."
