Sam is a down-on-his-luck guy who must deal with the passing of his wealthy father. His dad's sudden death turns out to be even more of a shock: Sam is stunned to learn that he has a sister, Frankie (Elizabeth Banks), that he didn't know existed. Frankie is a troubled mother of one, and a recovering alcoholic. It's Sam's job to make sure Frankie gets the $150,000 that her dad left in his estate. 'People Like Us' also stars Olivia Wilde, Michelle Pfeiffer, Mark Duplass and Jon Favreau. If you're interested in great movie quotes from other films, check out some of these lists for the best lines from 'Seeking a Friend for the End of the World,' 'Moonrise Kingdom,' 'Damsels in Distress,' 'Jeff Who Lives at Home,' 'The Vow,' 'The Lucky One,' 'Bernie,' 'Safety Not Guaranteed,' 'Crazy, Stupid, Love' 'The Descendants,' 'Chronicle,' 'Wanderlust,' and 'Darling Companion.'
Will Never Hit on You
Sam isn't kidding: There's absolutely no way he'll ever hit on Frankie, though she doesn't know why -- yet. She just takes it as an insult.
Frankie: "Can I get you something...that they sell here?"
Sam: "Look, look, I swear to you on my life I am not and will never hit on you. Ever."
Frankie: "Wow, thank you."
Lean Into It
This situation has prompted Sam to rethink everything in his life, and to try and become a better person for it. Here, he passes on his father's sage advice to his nephew, Josh (Michael Hall D'Addario). Sam is definitely leaning into it.
Sam: "My father, he always said 'lean into it.'"
Josh: "What does that mean?"
Sam: "It means that the outcome doesn't matter. What matters is that you were there for it -- whatever 'it' is, good or bad. Kinda like right now."
I Don't Exist
Frankie is at her AA meeting when she decides to share her father's obituary with the group. Her brother, Sam, is at the meeting (though she doesn't know he's her brother). Sam learns from her words just how hurt Frankie is, and was, by their father's betrayal many years ago.
Frankie: "My son blew up a pool at school today. With salt. And then I got a call from a sponsor who...that...uh..." (reads her father's obituary) "American record producer Jerry Harper died in Los Angeles Tuesday after a long battle with cancer. He was 63. Cancer. From the mid 70s to mid 80s Harper was known as a pioneering producer and A&R man who never achieved the fame or credit he deserved. He is survived by his wife and son. So. It's official: I don't exist...woo hoo"
Both Sam and Lillian realize that they must accept what's happened and move forward. Lillian still no doubt struggles with her husband's past, and Sam is struggling to do the right thing by everyone in his family, including the sister he never knew he had.
Lillian: "Maybe we could both start trying to be..."
Sam: "Be people."
