Food is a language all its own and when we travel there is no quicker way to hear what a country is trying to say than to dive into its favorite dishes. Eating the food that a place takes pride in and learning the history of that food ultimately helps us to better connect with where we are and who we are with.Â
Countries take pride in their cuisine and some present it to the world, asking everyone to share. Others hold onto it, almost as a secret that they share amongst the initiated. Redditors from all over the world shared what food someone should try when they visit their country.
If you visit Belgium, Redditor u/Yaron4444 suggests sampling fries, Belgian waffles, local beer, and pralines, which are the locally made famous filled chocolates.
According to Redditor u/I_LOVE_PONYPLAY, anyone eating their way through France must try a proper croissant, a tarte flambée, a choux pastry filled with praline flavoured cream called a Paris brest, and this kouign-amann, known as the "fattiest pastry" in Europe.
Redditor u/dracarys240 insists that after tastings several countries' shawarmas, his native Syria's version of this thinly sliced meat roasting on a spit is the best.
