There are dozens of popular and incredible YA book-turned-movies, but The Hunger Games will always stick out to us as a favorite. With a dark, dystopian reality setting and thoughtfully fleshed out characters, it's easy to see why. Even within the best stories, though, there can be more than a few loose ends. From unanswered questions to character quirks, we managed to round up some plot holes from The Hunger Games that made us go "Huh?"

When Katniss is unspooling the wire down the mountain it suddenly stops unspooling, on account of another tribute holding the wire. She is jerking and tugging on the spool of wire, and it wont budge. But since she is actually holding the spool, it should roll off freely, it wouldn't matter if someone was holding one end down!

There Should Be Way More Names In The Reaping Bowl
The Reaping. Lets consider there are around 20000 people in each district, we can say that 10-20% are of reaping age (which is probably optimistic), that gives us 2000-4000 people, on average, there are 3.5 “ballots” per person (1 for each 12 year old, 7 for 18 year olds), that means somewhere between 7000 and 14000 “ballots” - you would need a cement mixer truck to contain that (or even turn it) yet they reach into a glass bowl no larger than goldfish bowl to pick one. My assumption was they take all the ballots, mixed them in their cement mixing truck and then throw a bunch in a bowl for show at the “public” reaping.
Does Peta just have some kind of futuristic chameleon paint that becomes whatever color he needs it to be? I mean, when he needs to blend into a tree, he has 200 shades of brown to match the tree exactly. When he needs to blend into a rock, he has 50 shades of grey to match the rock exactly. Where did he get all of this paint?
At one point, we see Peta using his art skills to blend into a rock, since he has suffered a leg wound at the hands of Cato. This seems cool at first, but, when you think about it, it is very illogical. This means that Cato, a ruthless, seasoned, expert killer, stabbed peta IN THE LEG, and then let him limp/ hobble/ crawl away all the way to the river. Cato then let Peta spend 3 hours covering his entire body in paint.

The Escape Plan In 'Catching Fire' Relied Too Much On Chance
OK, so the escape from the dome. We are supposed to believe that Katniss shot an arrow 1000 (rough estimation) straight up in the air with a 1/8" copper wire attached that was perfectly timed with lightning bolt, and that's how they escape? Surely that couldn't have been the plan. Was the original plan to shock to water in the beach to overload the system? Is that explained in the books or are we just going to ignore the lack of an escape plan and just be happy that they magically escaped?
Let's just go back to the original plan: poking the wall. That's still a very flimsy plan. I'm not saying it wouldn't work, but it would be very risky. Way too many variables. Way too easy to mess up. And if they do, what then? The "revolution" ends before it begins? Or was Katniss even that important?
My main problem isn't with the physical impossibilities (those just add to my discontent). It just doesn't make sense to me that, when everything else is so perfectly calculated (with Heavensbee reaching such a powerful position to control both the president and the games) that they would leave the escape (the thing that everything else was set up for) to such chance. Obviously the arrow wasn't part of the plan. Otherwise they wouldn't have done everything to keep Katniss in the dark (even to the very end.) And obviously the poking plan had some major flaws (seeing as BeeTee is lying on the ground unconscious after failing.)
So yeah. That's my beef.

The Odds Of Getting Chosen For The Games Would Decrease If Everyone Put Their Name In For Food
So they said in the books that if you add your name in the jar more times, then you get extra food. Imagine everyone doubled their name count, or tripled it (or multiplied it by 100). The probability of being chosen would stay the same for everyone and in the process, everyone would be getting 100 times the amount of food. Never made sense to me.

The Games Should Not Have Prevented People From Rebelling
I don’t understand what the Games have to do with keeping the districts from rebelling. If anything, watching some of their children get murdered would seem to increase the likelihood of furious revolt. If spectacle is the point (as in Brave New World), where do gladiator-style deathmatches fit in? If brute force is the purpose (as in 1984), why bother with the elaborate process of drafting kids into postmodern murderball?
