Plucked string instrument: list of all the most popular musical instruments in this family. Any well-known instrument in the Plucked string instrument instruments family is included along with photos when available. List includes Portuguese guitar, Ektara, more. By far and away, the most popular instrument in the plucked string family is the guitar. Think about how different the world would be without the guitar. In its many incarnations, along with the bass, the guitar has allowed for so many people to learn music by plucking its strings and creating music. The world would be a different place if plucked string instruments weren't around. The same goes for instruments like ukulele and the banjo. Though the sounds created by these instruments are very different, the one thing they have in common is that they're all a part of the plucked string family. Whether it's the electric guitar or the bandurria, it doesn't matter, all of these instruments have strings.   {#nodes}

    The acoustic bass guitar is a bass instrument with a hollow wooden body similar to, though usually somewhat larger than a steel-string acoustic guitar. Like the traditional electric bass guitar and the double bass, the acoustic bass guitar commonly has four strings, which are normally tuned E-A-D-G, an octave below the lowest four strings of the 6-string guitar, which is the same tuning pitch as an electric bass guitar. The main source of sound in an acoustic guitar is the string, which is plucked with the finger or with a plectrum. The string vibrates at a necessary frequency and also create many harmonics at various different frequencies. The frequencies produced can depend on string length, mass, and...  more

  • The baglamas or baglamadaki, a long necked bowl-lute, is a plucked string instrument used in Greek music; it is a version of the bouzouki pitched an octave higher, with unison pairs on the four highest strings and an octave pair on the lower D. Musically, the baglamas is most often found supporting the bouzouki in the Piraeus city style of rebetiko. The body is often hollowed out from a piece of wood or else made from a gourd, but there are also baglamas with staved backs. Its small size made it particularly popular with musicians who needed an instrument transportable enough to carry around easily or small enough to shelter under a coat. During parts of the 20th century, players of the...  more
