Embodying one of the more gruesome sides of history, assassination photos capture some of the most tumultuous events of the past. They do, however, reduce the size and scale of these events into a single photo, bringing a mundane finality to these figures' stories. Death, the only guarantee of any person's life, greeted these people prematurely – while many of these famous assassinations occurred without a moment's notice, others were heavily anticipated and even expected when they finally did occur.

Included below are photos of assassinated presidents, felons, and civil rights leaders, each of whom met an untimely end. Many could argue that some on this list, like Bonnie and Clyde, deserved their fate, but others, such as Che Guevara and Malcolm X, were unfairly taken from this world before their work could even truly begin. Regardless of personal feelings towards these figures, these deaths changed the course of human history, for better or worse.
