Fighting evil and saving the world is a tough job, but in the world of The Powerpuff Girls, three superpowered elementary school girls find it to be a surprisingly easy task. Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup comprise the Powerpuff Girls, a colorful, playful, monster-bashing task force. The secret behind their superpowers? They were created in a lab by their quirky scientist dad, Professor Utonium, with a little help from an extra ingredient - Chemical X.

When it comes to the world of The Powerpuff Girls, the show itself is a '90s fever dream filled with characters that were inspired by magical girls, sci-fi mega-minds, and even the Devil himself. The show explained little outside of the world immediately revolving around the daily events of the girls, but fan theories about The Powerpuff Girls and their characters have attempted to pick up the slack.

The Professor Accidentally Spilled Chemical X Into His Experiment Because Mojo Jojo Pushed Him

Back in the days when Mojo Jojo was Professor Utonium's science pet, Mojo Jojo was actually afraid of the Professor's lab experiments. Redditor /u/Marko-tron157 thinks that this is the reason why the Professor ended up dumping Chemical X in the mix he was making to create the perfect little girls.

While he was carefully concocting the mixture, Mojo Jojo attempted to thwart the Professor's plans by pushing him. This caused the Professor to break the bottle, granting the Powerpuff Girls their superpowers and Mojo Jojo his giant brain.

HIM Can Regenerate At Will, Which Is Why He Keeps Coming Back

To make sense of why HIM can seemingly perish and and come back to life with ease, Redditor /u/Asotil speculates that HIM has the power to regenerate his being and that the devilish character can't be defeated, just depleted of astral energy.

In this theory, the HIMs that the audience sees perish are merely projections. Since they're not technically full forms of HIM, they are energy projections, he can easily use his powers to respawn another being once he's built up enough negative energy again.

The Professor Created The Girls From His Own DNA Because He Can’t Have Kids

According to a theory hypothesized by Redditor /u/Marko-tron157, the Professor is reproductively sterile. Because he isn't able to have kids of his own, he used his sciencey brain to concoct the ingredients needed to create life in another way.

In an alchemic fashion, they also claim that the professor included his own blood in the mix, so that his DNA could be infused in the ingredients. The mixture produced the three Homunculus Powerpuff Girls.

HIM Created All Of The Show’s Other Villains

One of HIM's most satanic abilities is the power to manifest evil entities. If he can resurrect characters like the Rowdyruff Boys, why can't he craft up new villains as well?

According to one Redditor, HIM is the reason for the existence of some of the show's villains, such as Sedusa, the hair-wielding tyrant, and Fuzzy Lumpkins, the backwoods hot-head. Sedusa got her powers from using a HIM brand shampoo, granting her hair demonic superpowers and driving her insane. Fuzzy Lumpkins was cursed by HIM and transformed into a lumpy, grumpy pink beast.

The City Of Townsville Is A Military Testing Facility For Chemical X Creations

In a militant view of the City of Townsville and its inhabitants, Redditor /u/SnowGryphon claims that the city itself is just a testing site being used to train their superweapons - the Powerpuff Girls. Taking into account the fact that the Mayor seems to be woefully incompetant and that the evil entities seem to only appear in the City of Townsville, it would make sense that the city is a specially sanctioned area to test Chemical X. On top of this, its citizens don't show any interest in moving, even though it is constantly beset by monsters, which seems odd considering Citiesville is nearby and not under nearly as much duress.

If all goes well in the testing of their chemically created superheroes, the military is sure to produce more of them.

The Professor Chose Girls For A Moral Reason

Professor Utonium's decision to create girls instead of boys was a moral decision. According to Redditor /u/worstpone, the reason why is in the ingredients.

As the nursery rhyme goes, little girls are made of sugar, spice, and everything nice, which are fairly simple ingredients. On the other hand, little boys are made of snakes, snails, and puppy dog tails. Since the latter would involve hurting living creatures, the Professor chose to go with the alternative.
