Product placement has been around longer than film, with the Golden Age of Radio being completely stuffed with mentions of one product or another in strange and interrupting ways. When televisions started finding their way into everyone's homes, product placement became the name of the game. Whether you know it or not, you've been the victim of targeted advertising via product placement in some of your favorite shows.
When it comes to movies, there was some product placement revolving around cars in the early days, but not much else until recently. Now, you can watch a movie and see dozens of notable products in various scenes without even realizing it, and often, product placement can lead to some great movie moments. You could watch a movie like Fight Club without realizing you've been "sold" on buying a cup of Starbucks coffee (because there's one in every scene). Some product placements are obvious, while others are done so well they require a rewind and a rewatch.
