Several famous rappers survived being shot. On May 24, 2000, 50 Cent was shot nine times at close range. He spent 13 days in the hospital treating his wounds. When he was 15 years old, Timbaland was accidentally shot by a co-worker. He was left partially immobile for nine months.

On February 19, 2020, Brooklyn rapper Bashar Barakah Jackson, better known as Pop Smoke, was pronounced dead at a hospital in West Hollywood. He was 20 years old.
Rolling Stone, among others, reported that this was a murder which occurred during a home invasion by two masked gunmen. Police were called to the home at 4:20 that morning but the gunmen were not caught and law enforcement has not publicly identified possible suspects.
In response to the death, there has been an outpouring of support online from both fans and fellow industry members, with rappers such as Nick Minaj writing, "Rest In Peace, Pop," and Republic Records releasing the statement, "Our prayers and thoughts go out to his family, friends and fans, as we mourn this loss together."

After being shot multiple times in front of his store The Marathon Clothing on March 31, 2019, Nipsey Hussle perished from his injuries.
In an interview with NPR Music in 2018, Hussle had spoken about growing up in South Central Los Angeles, saying "So to make it out mentally stable and not in prison and not on drugs, that's a win. That's a victory in itself." Hussle had been scheduled to sit down with the president of the Los Angeles Board of Police Commissioners and the city’s chief of police the next day to discuss ways to stop gang violence.

The rapper behind "That's On Me," one of the hottest tracks of 2018, was shot in a drive-by shooting during the early hours of October 14, 2018, just outside of Lewisville, Texas.
Reportedly, the rapper was shot at over a dozen times as he was driving on the Sam Rayburn Tollway. Authorities found him harmed on the side of State Highway 121 around 3:30 a.m. The rapper went to the hospital, and sources claimed he was in stable condition.
