Roald Dahl was a prolific writer whose works inspired many classic and quirky films. The top movies based on Roald Dahl books adapt his complex, fascinating stories with humor, whimsy, and a little bit of darkness. This is a list of the greatest Roald Dahl movie adaptations including everything from James and the Giant Peach to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to 36 Hours.

What films will you find on this list of Roald Dahl books made into movies? Dahl himself wrote the screenplay for Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, which featured Gene Wilder in the title role. But after the movie was released, Dahl objected to many of the rewrites that he didn't approve. The Witches is another good movie based on one of his novels. The segments in Four Rooms are loosely based on several of Dahl's adult short stories. Other good films featured on this list of the best Roald Dahl movies include Matilda, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and The BFG.
