Though the memorialization of any distressing period throughout history is often unsettling, the Russian revolution produced some of the most haunting photos of any world conflict. In 1917, the country revolted against its imperial leaders, launching the foundation for the Soviet Union. Industrialization didn't reach Russia until the early 20th century - much later than their Western counterparts - and this resulted in both overpopulation and politically charged changes. For years, revolutionaries lived in poverty, and the country suffered from food shortages and protests.
From famine to the destruction of the dictatorship to the cavalry, these photos of the Russian revolution are just as difficult to behold as those of any other large-scale conflict.
