Sad Movies to Bum You OutLists of the best movies to watch when all you want to do is wrap yourself in a blanket burrito, flop over sideways, and feel terrible about the world and everything in it.
Vote up the moments in big, fun action movies that actually made you a little emotional.
Action movies had a lot of heart in the 2000s. That's not to say they don't have heart today, but it pumps a little slower. Think of the best action flicks of the decade - Iron Man, I Am Legend, The Dark Knight, Sin City, etc. - and you'll recall scenes of intense combat and intense sadness. Here are some of the saddest action movie deaths and moments.
One of doesthedogdie.com's worst offenders, I Am Legend presents viewers with a gorgeous German shepherd as the sole companion of Neville, the supposed "last man on Earth," only to have it perish in his arms. Worse still, Neville puts down the dog himself, as it has become infected with the civilization-ending virus and is becoming zombified in real time.
Neville does it as an act of mercy - although no mercy is given to viewers.
Boromir's reputation would be abysmal among LOTR fans if it weren't for his demise. Before going out in a blaze of glory, he tries to take the Ring from Frodo. He's the only member of the Fellowship who does so, but he immediately recognizes his error and sacrifices his life to protect the group from Uruk-hai.
Through his moral failing and redemption, Boromir is considered one of the most human characters of the trilogy.
After defeating Bonesaw in an underground wrestling match, Peter gets stiffed on the prize money. Karma collects from the promoter, though, in the form of an armed robber. Peter could have stopped the robber if he weren't so spiteful.
Karma collects again when Uncle Ben is slain in a carjacking by the robber whom Peter let escape. This realization initially shatters him but eventually turns him into a better person.
It must have been tough to wrap up Sam and Frodo's unique relationship, but Peter Jackson managed to do it spectacularly. Before departing on a ship bound for the Undying Lands, Frodo gives Sam the Red Book of Westmarch on which to write the final chapter.
Then they embrace, Sam tearful and Frodo tender. A kiss on Sam's head seals the moment - and the friendship.
Tony and Yinsen are cave bros in Afghanistan, imprisoned by the terrorist group Ten Rings and forced to build a missile. Instead, they work on a secret project that enables Tony to escape and turn him into Iron Man. Only Tony escapes because Yinsen diverts the terrorists while the suit powers up.
The saddest part of the scene is when Tony implores Yinsen to get up for his family's sake, to which Yinsen replies that they are already dead: "I'm going to see them now."
For a comedy movie, Shaun of the Dead has no shortage of sad scenes. Case in point: when Shaun is forced to kill his mother after she turns into a zombie.
Following an absurd yet heart-wrenching standoff over how to proceed with the infected Barbara (Shaun's mom), she stands up, looking completely ravenous, making the answer simple. Shaun takes the gun, aims it at her head, says "I'm sorry, Mom," and then blasts her to pieces.
The little bit of recognition Barbara shows after Shaun says "I'm sorry, Mom" might be the saddest part of the scene.
