It stars Sanjay Dutt, Arshad Warsi, Jimmy Shergill, Sunil Dutt, Gracy Singh and Boman Irani and was later followed by a second film Lage Raho Munna Bhai, and became the first installment of Munna Bhai film series. It went on to win the 2004 National Film Award for Best Popular Film, and several Filmfare awards, including the Critics Award for Best Movie and Best Screenplay. It was declared a 'Hit' at the Indian Box office.

It was nominated for and won many awards. Over the years it has become a Cult film. The film was followed by the 2002 sequel Hathyar.
