It went on to win the 2004 National Film Award for Best Popular Film, and several Filmfare awards, including the Critics Award for Best Movie and Best Screenplay. It was declared a 'Hit' at the Indian Box office.

It was nominated for and won many awards. Over the years it has become a Cult film. The film was followed by the 2002 sequel Hathyar.
