They don't make action movies like they used to. Great stars, great stunts, great one-liners, and none of that wall-to-wall CGI you see nowadays. Also, get off my lawn. Classic action flicks were filmed at a variety of locations, and some of them were even outside Los Angeles! Here are a few examples as seen by satellite.
Though ostensibly set in ancient Greece, the original 1981 version of Clash of the Titans was filmed in England, Spain, Italy, and Malta. The climactic scene of Perseus's encounter with the Kraken was filmed at a collapsed natural arch called Azure Window on the island of Gozo in Malta.
Last of the Mohicans is set in upstate New York near the Adirondacks, but Michael Mann's 1992 adaptation was mostly filmed in North Carolina. The climactic chase and battle sequence, where Hawkeye, Chingachgook, and Uncas pursue the villainous Magua, was filmed at picturesque Chimney Rock, NC.
The jungle scenes of Predator were partly filmed about a half-hour's drive from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The area has become a tourist attraction, complete with a Predator statue.
Die Hard's “Nakatomi Plaza” is actually Fox Plaza, a skyscraper adjacent to the 20th Century Fox movie lot in Los Angeles's Century City. The building had only just been completed when filming began. The production used both exteriors and interiors of the building. Fox Plaza is pretty hard to miss if you ever happen to be driving around LA.
At the end of 1997's Starship Troopers, the humans infiltrate the Bugs' homeworld of Klendathu, where they capture a “Brain Bug” after a perilous battle. So where do you go when you want to film an arachnid-infested wasteland? Wyoming, it turns out. Specifically, the Klendathu scenes were filmed at an area called Hell's Half-Acre.
The famous bank heist in Michael Mann's Heat was filmed along Fifth Street in the heart of downtown Los Angeles. The exterior of the bank was a building at 444 Flower St., and from there the action moved to several nearby locations.
