As one of the most popular video game franchises in history, Capcom's Resident Evil series has been terrifying gamers for more than 20 years. Premiering on the PlayStation in 1996, the first Resident Evil was a game-changer, essentially revolutionizing the survival horror genre and proving that video games, could, in fact, be pretty freaking terrifying.
While each installment features engaging characters (some recurring, some new) and eerie backdrops, the in-game designs—namely, the diabolical monsters—are one of the series' main staples. And now, with the Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 remakes upping the ante with improved graphics, gameplay mechanics, and more, these classic Resident Evil villains have never looked scarier.
From imposing enemies like Mr. X to horrifyingly huge creatures like the Draghignazzo, there have been some incredibly scary Resident Evil bosses over the years, but which ones actually gave you nightmares? Vote up all the enemies who terrified you the most, regardless of where they came from or how tragic their backstories are.

Easily one of the most powerful bosses in Resident Evil history, The Nemesis-T Type is a relentless creature that, like Tyrant, is constantly stalking you throughout the game. It doesn't help that the creature is insanely strong, imposing as hell, and features a rocket launcher to boot (or at least he did in the original game). Perhaps even scarier, this is one of the few enemies that when you first encounter can't actually be killed —no matter how hard you try. Created by Umbrella's No. 6 Laboratory, Nemesis is both highly intelligent and extremely powerful, making him one of the more formidable foes in the series.
Fighting Nemesis head-on when he appears throughout the game is a fool's errand. The best thing to do when you see Nemesis is to get as far away from him as possible. If you have high-powered weapons, you can stun him for a bit while you plan your escape.

Easily one of the most iconic bosses in the series, Mr. X (officially known as T-00) is a tyrant sent to Raccoon City during the Destruction Incident. He was given instructions to recover a G-Virus sample and kill any survivors. His mammoth stature and imposing build make him a scary foe, but the fact that he's always pursuing you—through doors, walls, and more—makes him truly terrifying.
After Mr. X makes his entrance, he will pursue you relentlessly. However, there are some rooms you can go to where he won't follow. These rooms include the main hall of the police station and the clock tower. If you enter one of these rooms, he'll sulk outside and eventually wander off. Depending on which character you choose, he might end up as the main boss fight.
Luckily, he wears his heart on the outside, making it easy to target the weakest part of his body. Watch out for when he roars because this indicates that he's about to use his most powerful attack. When this happens, shoot him as much as you can in the heart to stagger him before he strikes. If you fail to stop the attack he will perform a devastating attack that can instantly kill you.

William Birkin was a Virologist that worked for Umbrella Pharmaceuticals from the 1970s to 1990s. He was the head of the Golgotha Virus research project who eventually turned against the Corporation after he didn't receive a promotion. In this time he becomes mutated and becomes known simply as G. One of the few Resident Evil bosses to still offer a spark of his human form, his design in the Resident Evil 2 Remake was nothing short of terrifying.
For better or worse, you'll have to fight Birkin throughout five various stages in Resident Evil 2. In Stage 1 he doesn't have any natural weapons, so he'll use his superhuman strength to tear a pipe from the guardrail and attack with that instead. He can kill you in one hit, so you need to be very careful during this stage.
In Stage 2, you can use the Proposed Water Purification Room's large crane to deal a significant amount of damage. In Stage 3, the attacks are similar to the previous stage. In stage 4, you'll need to very careful to avoid getting chewed. This blow can kill you instantly depending on the status of your character. Stage 5 is the final form of G. He will attack using giant tentacles and swipe through the train car in an attempt to devour you. You only have a limited amount of time to kill G, or you else you'll be caught.

Easily one of the most famous in Resident Evil, Lisa Trevor was a woman who was abducted by Umbrella Pharmaceuticals to be used as a test subject for several unethical and illegal weapons experiments with the Progenitor virus. Through various injections and experiments, she becomes twisted and deformed, eventually deemed a danger to her staff. Known as the first human test subject that eventually gave way to the Tyrant Virus, her backstory is almost as sad and twisted as her in-game design.
When she tries to attack you, make sure you shower her with enough bullets to push her back. The only time you don't want to employ this strategy is in the 2002 Resident Evil Remake when you're in the mansion. Instead, you should try to avoid her in this situation or she will become incredibly annoying as you make your way through the mansion.
