Sinkholes, though frightening to consider, are more common than one might think. They occur when water erodes rock underneath the soil and creates an underground chasm. In 2010, a 60-foot deep sinkhole opened up in Guatemala, thought to be the result of a burst sewer pipe or storm drain. Though true sinkholes are generally more natural, pictures of sinkholes in the middle of a developed city are often a far more threatening concept to consider.
