Werewolves in horror are some of the most haunting, terrifying, and generally unnerving creatures the frightful genre has ever created, yet for some reason, there is an extreme lack of legitimate scary werewolf movies in the world. Often times the creatures are played for jokes or are simply side characters in horror stories, but in these utterly terrifying tales of lycans and werewolves, they are front and center and bringing the blood-soaked terror to any brave enough to watch. The scariest werewolf movies are guaranteed to make any horror fan afraid of the moonlight and offer then a frightfully fun time.

From spine-chilling werewolf movies that showcased some of the most frightening and brutal transformation scenes of all time that have stuck with audiences for generations in films like The Howling and An American Werewolf in London to films that have sudden and shocking busts of stomach-churning violence and gore that would make even the most hardcore horror fans queasy in films like Ginger Snaps and Trick r' Treat, the best scary werewolf movies know how to perfectly blur the line of camp and malevolence to create an unforgettable horror experience. Genuinely scary werewolf movies are incredibly hard to come by, but every frightening film on this list is all but guaranteed to haunt audiences' nightmares for years.

Long before director Joe Dante became a master at creating frights the whole family could enjoy, he created The Howling, one of the most important and revered werewolf movies of all time. A film that puts the brutality back into the savage beasts, the titular howling monstrocities are absolutely jaw-dropping and blood-curdling and showcase a team on their absolute A-game creating something that would revolutionize cinema. While it may not go down as the best, it is undoubtedly one of the scariest werewolf movies.

Widely regarded as on of the best werewolf movies of all time, An American Werewolf in London is much more of a horror comedy than a prototypical scary movie, but that isn't to say there are a plethora of spine-chilling scenes. The transformation scene alone is one of the most haunting and visually stunning in werewolf movie history, and the shocking amount of jump scares and jarring imagery is enough to satisfy the appetite of any looking to get a good fright.

  • Trick 'r Treat

Since its release in 2007, Trick ‘r Treat has quickly become the poster child for modern-day Halloween horror movies, and even though it may be an anthology film, the scene of werewolf terror is undoubtedly one of the scariest in the history of horror.  Showcasing one of the most disturbing and sadistic transformation scenes of all time, Trick ’r Treat will leave audiences with battle scars they won't ever be able to recover from. The only downside to this film is the fact that the actual werewolves in the movie are only in for one scene, but even with just that one scene, it more than lives up to the hype of the scariest werewolf movie of all time.

Widely regarded as the scariest werewolf movie of all time, Ginger Snaps is an early 2000s gem that is as wild and brutal as its premise suggests. The night a young woman gets her first period, she is brutally attacked by a werewolf and subsequently transformed into one of the horrid creatures, and now her sister must find out how to save her family and turn her sister back into a human. The plot of the film is, admittedly, bonkers, but the feminist discourse surrounding the film shouldn't take away from the fact that it is genuinely blood-curdling terrifying and will give audiences exactly what they want from a scary werewolf movie.
