Just because a character appears to strong doesn't mean that they actually are. If you dig a little deeper, you'll find that some characters who seem like powerhouses are actually anything but. Anime characters who are secretly weak can be sources of humor when they're revealed to be far more pitiful than their bragging implied - Nagamitsu Sakonshougen from Samurai Champloo is a great example of this. But these characters can also grow and change over time, owning up to their lack of power and deciding to do something about it, as Terufumi Sugimoto does in Yowamushi Pedal when he finally realizes that he's not a cycling expert.
These characters may not be strong, but they still deserve some appreciation. Which one is your favorite?
Reigen Arataka - 'Mob Psycho 100'Photo: Studio Bones
Reigen Arataka is a self-proclaimed psychic who exorcises ghosts for cash. The thing is, he lacks any supernatural powers whatsoever. The only reason that he survives his skirmishes with ghosts is thanks to Mob, his young employee who actually has psychic powers.
While Reigen definitely lacks the powers he claims to possess, he makes up for it with street smarts, charisma, and a deep sense of loyalty to the people he cares about. Is this character secretly weak?

Nagamitsu Sakonshougen wants to be recognized as the greatest samurai in history, and he believes that he has a real shot at accomplishing this. The main trio are forced into dealing with him because he wants to defeat Jin, a samurai who owns a special title - "Undefeated in one thousand duels."
While his hypemen do a good job of making him look cool, he's actually not a particularly talented fighter, and Jin has no trouble defeating him. Further embarrassing himself, he hits on Fuu, disrespecting both her and his wife in the process. Is this character secretly weak?
Abidos III - 'Yu-Gi-Oh! GX'Photo: Studio Gallop
Abidos III is an ancient pharaoh who won countless games of Duel Monsters, and therefore thought of himself as a world-class player. He has a rude awakening when he takes physical form in modern Japan and does battle with Judai (known as Jaden in the dub).
As it turns out, Abidos III wasn't actually all that good at dueling - it's just that his subjects were so afraid of invoking his wrath that they always let him win. Judai is able to defeat him with little difficulty. Is this character secretly weak?
Aqua - KonoSubaPhoto: Studio Deen
When Kazuma Satou is reincarnated into a fantasy world, he's allowed to choose a single item to help with his newly assigned quest. He chooses Aqua, the goddess who presented him with this choice. While Aqua is a goddess and certainly seems like she would be impressive... she isn't.
This is because Aqua puts all of her effort into learning party tricks and trying to gain followers, rather than actually learning skills that would benefit her in combat. At least she's funny? Is this character secretly weak?
