Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, but some of these Sailor Moon clones weren’t even trying. Sailor Moon was one of the earliest in the magical girl genre to incorporate a team of magical girls fighting together, rather than the lone magical girl. Since then, many manga and anime writers have taken the formula and run with it.Some of these shows that completely ripped off Sailor Moon didn’t even bother to change their characters’ costumes, hairstyles, or weapons, basically just copying and pasting from the Sailor Moon template. Instead of being peeved, Sailor Moon fans should be thrilled to have so many magical girl shows - that means even more of the things we love: transformations, unnecessarily drawn out attacks, pendants, brooches, wands, ribbons, and all of that beautiful and lustrous hair. Sailor Moon was a pioneer in the team fighting magical girl genre. Without it, you might not have gotten seven seasons of your favorite mahou shoujo.
Super Twins is a live-action Filipino telefantasya that aired in 2007. When the teaser trailer for this show first dropped, it received so much criticism for being a Sailor Moon rip-off that the production company changed up the costumes because they were too similar to the Sailor Moon ones. Even with the minor changes, it’s difficult not to see where the show got its “inspiration.”
Pretty Cure comes from the same animation studio as Sailor Moon, TOEI Animation. The transformations are fairly similar in style and even some scenes have identical blocking. Also, several of the characters, like Cure Caramel and Sailor Moon, have striking similarities. Both shows revolve around a group of middle school girls fighting for love, friendship, and peace who target evil spirits trying to take over the world.
Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch is basically Sailor Moon but instead of being guardians, the protagonists are mermaids. Like in Sailor Moon, the main character of Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch needs to keep her true identity a secret. Also, the main character, Lucia Nanami, looks an awful lot like Usagi. She has the same hair color and hair style, and two of her fellow mermaids are rocking some serious Sailor Mercury and Sailor Jupiter vibes.
Wedding Peach is about a middle school student named Momoko Hanasaki and her friends who learn they are legendary Love Angels who must protect the world from the evil Reine Devila and her minions. This is pretty close to the Season 1 arc for Sailor Moon. Not only that, but Momoko is given a magical compact by an ally, very similar to the way Usagi was given her transformation brooch (which then transformed into a compact) by Luna.
