Ever since 1944, The Hollywood Foreign Press has awarded out Golden Globes to honor achievements for both the silver and the small screen. Well, at least that was the intention. Occasionally, categories and nominations have gotten a little muddled, causing questionable moments and nominations for the long-running kudocast. From films winning in the wrong category to scandals following selected winners, the Golden Globes has had its fair share of scandals and memorable moments.
Here is a look a few of the strangest wins, oddball nominations, and unexpected moments from the Golden Globes.

The Martian is a great movie, but it is definitely neither a musical nor a comedy. Starring Matt Damon, the 2016 Globe winner follows an astronaut left behind on Mars, where he must find a way to survive until he is rescued. Needless to say, the feature film was neither a laugh riot nor a story told through song.
Many speculated that the sci-fi pic was placed in the category because it had a good chance of winning, as the drama field was packed that year, with films such as Room, The Revenant, Spotlight, Carol and Mad Max: Fury Road competed for top drama honors.
Director Judd Apatow, whose movie Trainwreck was bumped from consideration because of The Martain, stated in a tweet, "Trying to dominate the comedy category when you are really a drama afraid of dramatic competition is a punk move. ”
The Martian's win caused the HFPA to change their rules for the following year, clearly defining the boundries of comedy and drama.425Mystifying moment?

In 2020, Ricky Gervais will take to the podium for the fifth time as he returns as host of the Golden Globes. A little strange considering the reception he's receive over past performances.
Ever since his debut as host in 2010, Gervais has taken aim at all of Hollywood, poking fun at almost everyone in the Beverly Hill Hotel ballroom. No A-list star was safe. And his lack of filter created awkward moments for the telecast.
The New York Daily News stated in their review of his 2015 performance:
Gervais has always worked that high wire between naughty and unpleasant, of course, and here's the difference: The former feels like good fun, and the latter feels uncomfortable.
Sunday night was uncomfortable.
But although Gervais took shots at the Hollywood elite again and again, but that hasn't dissuaded the HFPA from banning him from the podium, despite the mood in the room. As Tina Fey once stated during her turn at the podium: "If you run afoul of the Hollywood Foreign Press, they make you host the show two more times."308Mystifying moment?

The Tourist is neither a musical nor a comedy, and according to many critics, it isn't even a good movie.
Starring Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie, the plot follows a man who visits Italy in an effort to heal a broken heart, meets a femme fatale, gets involved in an espionage plot, and goes on the run.
Nary a chuckle or a song be had during the adventure. And yet, it was nominated in the best musical/comedy category at the 2011 Golden Globes.
On Rotten Tomatoes, The Tourist scores a meager 20% and is buried under a batch of negative reviews. Peter Travers from Rolling Stone said, "In a year of craptaculars, The Tourist deserves burial at the bottom of the 2010 dung heap."275Mystifying moment?

The Golden Globes has a soft spot of Robin Williams, as the immensely talented performer racked up four Globe wins over his career. However, despite his impressive catalog of both comedic and dramatic roles, his turn in Patch Adams and the movie itself was not a strong example of his best work.
The movie currently holds a 22% on Rotten Tomatoes with critics calling out the film for "trying too hard." Even the real Patch Adams is a bit unthrilled with the celluloid version of his life.
"After the movie, there wasn’t a single positive article about our work or me. It made my children cry," said the real Adams.2010Mystifying moment?
