The Best Shoegaze Bands

List Rules
Shoegaze bands and artists only.

Moody, brooding, disengaged, and dark are just a few adjectives that can used to describe shoegaze bands. Emerging from the UK in the late 1980s to early 1990s, shoegaze musicians were given that moniker because of their live shows. These shows featured hardcore singers and instrumentalists standing still on-stage during live performances in a detached manner, where they would literally stare at the ground and shoe gaze (hence the name). The best shoegaze bands played a droning blend of alternative rock that focused on heavy drone guitars. Some could say that shoegaze artists played a brand of noise rock; but to many who are fans of shoegaze, they respect the minimalist nature of what these bands did in a live setting.

So, what are the top shoegaze bands of all time? My Bloody Valentine, Lush, Showdive and Ride are widely considered among the best shoegazers. Their sound helped pave the way for other bands across the genre, as well as other areas of alternative music.

That said, it's up to you to vote on this list and determine what group can truly be called the best shoegaze band. This list answers the questions "who are the best shoegazing bands of all time?" and "who is the greatest shoegazing musician ever?" If you know enough about the genre, please vote based on the quality of the artists' music (i.e. albums and songs) instead of just voting for the most popular, newer, or famous shoegazing bands that you might've heard of.
