The 15 Best Comic Relief Characters In Shonen Anime, Ranked

July 2, 2021 248 votes 42 voters15 items

Shonen anime often has high stakes and serious moments. While those moments are important, sometimes you need something to cut the tension. One of the the best ways to do that is through a comic relief character.

The best comic relief characters in shonen anime are there to make you laugh, but they also have personalities, backstories, relationships, and even powers of their own. Take Usopp from One Piece. While his cowardly personality and constant lying are a major source of humor, there's much more to him than just that. But even if a comic relief character doesn't get as much development as Usopp, they can still be a lot of fun.

We're leaving out characters from shows like Gintama and The Disastrous Life of Saiki K that are primarily in the comedy genre. As hilarious as some of those characters are, they're not providing relief from more serious moments - they're the whole deal. Don't worry, we didn't forget how hilarious Gintoki and Kagura can be.

  • Might Guy is proof that being comic relief doesn't mean being weak. He's a taijutsu expert who is one of the only living shinobi capable of standing up to Madara. But his funny moments are among the best in the series. Whether he's posing with Rock Lee in matching jumpsuits, crying about the power of youth, or hyping up his rivalry with Kakashi, it's hard not to laugh when the Blue Beast is on screen.

    Inosuke - Demon Slayer

Raise your hand if you started watching Demon Slayer because the screaming guy in the pig mask seemed hilarious. Inosuke is one of the funniest things about this otherwise dramatic show. From constantly getting Tanjiro's name wrong to competing with his comrades about literally everything, it's hard not to laugh - and hard not to feel moved whenever he actually does something right.

    Kon - Bleach

Kon is a modified soul trapped in the body of a stuffed animal. While this is kind of depressing if you think about it too hard, Kon is usually a source of amusement. Even if you hate the 'pervert' archetype, you still might find yourself chuckling over a stuffed animal pretending to be a stud or fantasizing about his large-chested comrades.

While he's not going to be the one to defeat a major villain, he's still a lot stronger than you'd expect considering his appearance. Aside from enhanced strength and speed, he can also serve as a communication device thanks to Kisuke Urahara's body mods.

Alex Louis Armstrong - Fullmetal Alchemist

Alex Louis Armstrong is a State Alchemist and officer in the Amestrian State Military, which means that he's powerful AF, and can be relied upon to help in difficult situations. He can also be relied on to make audiences laugh. Whether he's having a flexing content with Sig Curtis or getting owned by his sister, his take on manliness is absolutely delightful.
