"Thanks, Obama!" The sheer amount of things that for which people blame US President Barack Obama is staggering. While one can have perfectly valid disagreements with how the President of the United States is conducting the affairs of the country, others blame him for virtually everything that happens anywhere in the world, from planes being shot down to construction projects failing. Gas too expensive? Obama's fault. Gas too cheap? Obama's fault. People don't like George Zimmerman? Obama's fault.
Here are some of the strangest and most absurd things for which conservative commentators and politicians pin the blame on Obama. When it comes to facts about Obama, there's plenty to know about his track-record, his politics, and the policies he's put in place. But many people tend to focus on the things they think they can blame him for, and are all too eager to make Obama a scapegoat for just about anything.
Though any Barack Obama biography will likely have some facts and controversies for which he can be rightfully blamed, saying that flight MH17 went down because of Obama might be a bit of a stretch. Donald Trump has a policy of blaming Obama for three ridiculous things before lunch. So naturally, it was the President’s poor play calling that cost the Seattle Seahawks the Super Bowl in 2015 when quarterback Russell Wilson threw an interception on the goal line, as opposed to anything the Patriots did to intercept the pass. As with most Trump-related things, one can’t quite tell if he’s being serious or not, but he probably is.
Evangelical conservative and former Minnesota Republican congresswoman Michelle Bachmann not only believes that the Biblical end times are approaching, but that they’re the responsibility of President Obama. On something called the “End Times Radio Show” she said, “We are literally watching, month by month, the speed move up to a level we’ve never seen before with these events.” She also claimed, "Barack Obama is intent. It is his number one goal to ensure that Iran has a nuclear weapon.”
A poll in 2013 found that nearly a third of Republican voters in Louisiana blamed President Obama for the ineffectual government response to Hurricane Katrina. It apparently didn’t matter that the storm took place three years before Obama’s election; it was Obama's fault anyway.
Remember the teenage girl who started a social media firestorm by taking a smiling selfie at the Auschwitz death camp? Rather than blame the girl for not having a sense of propriety, a Fox News host blamed Barack Obama. Harris Faulkner claimed on the air that the girl was mimicking the President, saying “When the president does it, you’ve got a whole new generation now.”
She continued babbling “That gold standard isn’t what it used to be. You’ve got on a weekend, we’re talking Islamic state, we’re talking all sorts of things, and you’ve got a president with a selfie stick that’s as tall as I am taking pictures of himself, ‘Can’t get my hand in the cookie jar!’ Like, I’m not making this up.”
After spending months hammering Obama for prices going up, Fox News analysts turned around and blamed the president for gas prices going down. One wag wondered on the air if “cheap gas hurt the economy” and implied the president had the power to raise and lower gas prices at will.
Virtually every aspect of the Ebola outbreak of 2014 was blamed on Obama, from the outbreak itself to the small number of cases that were found in America. Every time a new case was discovered, from aid workers to nurses who had been in West Africa, the blame was pinned on the president.
Notably, when the outbreak was declared over in Liberia, those same critics were silent.
