Skills You Wish You'd Learned As A Kid

List RulesVote up any skills you wish you'd been taught when you were young.

Academic learning, no doubt, is an amazing privilege. It's pretty tremendous that elementary school offered you the chance to just sit around and absorb information. Isn't it incredible you know the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell and that DNA stands for deoxyribonucleic acid, even if these things don't really affect your day to day life? However, would it kill the school system - or our parents - to teach kids skills that will have sensible applications someday? There are likely some skills you wish you learned as a kid that were not strictly about scholarly topics. Alongside all the academic learning, why don't we learn practical life skills in childhood?

While you may still remember the order of operations via Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally, you likely have no idea what the difference between a W-2 and a W-9 is. You might be able to rattle off all the major Civil War battles, but are still not quite sure how to balance both a 9 to 5 job and a social life. You also may wish you knew some skills that could be an asset professionally, like speaking a second language or just general computer skills. As we get better at adulting, we have to oversee our own car maintenance, grocery shopping, stress and anxiety management, personal finances, and so on. Couldn't we have learned some of this stuff when we were younger? Perhaps elementary school teachers should be given a list of practical skills to teach kids.
