"Peter's Progress" Offers A Bevy Of Intellectual Humor

Ranker Video
Video: YouTube

First of all, there's the fact that the title of the episode itself is rather intellectual, a play on John Bunyan's 1678 classic, Pilgrim's Progress. Then there are the meta jokes about promos for made-up shows like Shovin' Buddies and Slowly Rotating Black Man. And of course, Peter's commentary on America:

"We will have equal rights for all. Except Blacks, Asians, Hispanics, Jews, Gays, women, Muslims. Umm... Everybody who's not a white man. And I mean white-white, so no Italians, no Polish, just people from Ireland, England, and Scotland. But only certain parts of Scotland and Ireland. Just full blooded whites. No, you know what? Not even whites. Nobody gets any rights. Ahhh... America!"

In Season 4, episode 10, the Griffins win a boat race, which is reported in the paper. Also in the paper is a headline joke in the lower right hand corner: "DVD's Paused For Headline Joke - Millions Disappointed." It's a meta-messaround that's made much funnier for its antiquated reference to DVDs. What even are those?!

Mayor Wests Are Troublemakers

Mayor Wests Are Troublemakers is listed (or ranked) 3 on the list Family Guy Jokes That Are Way, Way More Intellectual Than You Realized

In Season 4, there's an episode that must have been titled by writer Cherry Chevapravatdumrong, as it's called "You May Now Kiss the... Uh... Guy Who Receives." (Get it? It's long.)

Anyway, the episode is about Mayor West banning gay marriage, and at one point he has an apparent throwaway line, saying, "I'm the only Mayor West that's in trouble!" But it wasn't a throwaway at all. It's a reference to former Spokane, Washington Mayor, Jim West, who supported anti-gay legislation until he was ironically (or maybe not) outed as having engaged in homosexual acts himself.

Peter's Neuro-Chemical Response To Adult Films

Ranker Video
Video: YouTube

When Peter finds his old adult film collection, he's initially excited to sit down and watch it all. However, after a single session of self-gratification, he immediately decides he never wants to watch it again. This actually is an accurate representation of the neurochemical processes that occur during the viewing of adult films. Dopamine fires, often excessively, until the point of ejaculation where serotonin floods the brain. What is different with adult films is that the dopamine-induced urge to watch them overrides one's sense of morality, leading to a sense of regret once the production of dopamine abruptly ceases.
