The Best Songs About Politics

Updated June 3, 2020 6.0k votes 674 voters 24.1k views94 items

If much of music is devoted to protesting things, then songs about politics are frequently protesting politicians and the often questionable choices they make in the name of the greater good. The tracks on this list of political songs usually reference a larger social movement, rather than a specific political or political realm, although some of these tracks are quite specific in the issue they are addressing. Ironically, many times political protest songs are usurped by political candidates when they run for office, garnering support by using a song that stands in stark contrast to the views they are running on. Look through this list and see which tracks would get your vote.

It’s hard to talk about political songs without talking about Bob Dylan. Very early in his career Dylan penned two of the most famous politically charged songs, with “The Times They Are A-Changin’” and “Blowin’ in the Wind.”

Green Day revived their career by writing an album protesting George W. Bush’s Iraq War, called American Idiot. The title track became an early 21st century anthem for the disillusioned.

“Born in the U.S.A.” is a song protesting the Vietnam War by Bruce Springsteen. Ronald Reagan initially praised the song, thinking it was nationalistic, but its true meaning was later explained to him.
