Water. Earth. Fi... yada yada yada. In the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, most of the spotlight falls on the superpowered and highly capable elemental benders in the series, which is fine! The only issue is that if you focus on the flashy, you miss out on some amazingly powerful normal people that are weirdly the most relatable characters in the series. Sure, we viewers can't shoot fire out of our hands, but we could absolutely pick up a sword and take a swing at one of the oldest martial arts in existence. Some of the most powerful nonbenders aren't even fighters; they're inventors, political figures, and idealists, some of whom have just as much influence over the world as the Avatar themselves.
This is a collection of some of the most powerful nonbenders in Avatar and Korra. Vote up who you think are the most powerful nonbenders!
Daughter of a nobleman in the Fire Nation that joined up with a traveling circus, Ty Lee is an incredibly agile individual who is a fearsome opponent. Ty Lee's defining abilities are her mastery of pressure-point-striking martial arts, otherwise known as "chi blocking."
With her extensive knowledge of the human body, she could strike sequences of pressure points, immobilizing her enemies to various degrees. She had the ability to paralyze a single body part or an opponent's entire body. This technique allowed her to block certain chi paths in benders to compromise their abilities. This made her especially dangerous to benders who relied solely on their bending and possessed no secondary fighting skills. Combined with her extraordinary agility, she was able to defeat dozens of powerful earthbenders within seconds.
Suki was the leader of the Kyoshi Warriors, hailing from a village on Kyoshi Island. Having begun her training when she was only eight years old, she was well-respected by her fellow warriors for her leadership and combat skills. She was an impressive hand-to-hand combatant, holding her own against other skilled fighters and was adept at fighting with the traditional Kyoshi Warrior war fans, and was also skilled with the katana. Additionally, Suki possessed considerable physical strength, able to swim easily in full Kyoshi Warrior armor and toss aside a full-grown man with ease.
Piandao was a master swordsman who incorporated techniques of benders, warriors, and artisans into his swordsmanship; though retired from conflict, he was still considered the greatest swordsman in Fire Nation history, and one of the most powerful and skilled nonbenders in the world. His prowess was best renowned from having never lost a single battle and defeating a hundred Fire Nation soldiers so decisively that he was left in peace afterward.
In additional to his undeniable prowess in wielding a sword, Piandao was equally renowned for his skill in forging and repairing them with high quality and great artistic design. Many of his works became regarded as prized possessions of high price value. His skill could effectively use any form of material to create his swords, even a meteorite. Piandao was also a masterful artist, primarily in calligraphy, which further refined his precision and dexterity for swordsmanship.
An out-of-the-box tactician, Sokka was a scientific and engineering mastermind with a warrior's background. Trained in the sword by Master Piandao, he was skilled both on the battlefield and out of combat when it came to strategy. He was incredibly skilled with his trusty boomerang and had such proficiency that he was able to take down targets outside of his line of sight, utilizing mathematics to strike true.
Mai was skilled in marksmanship, specifically throwing weapons, favoring shuriken, knives, and darts. Her quickdraw capabilities allowed her to immobilize any number of combatants, ranging from skilled fire nation prison guards to benders of every origin. Opting for restraining rather than outright lethally wounding her targets, Mai was an unexpected powerhouse who shouldn't be underestimated. Additionally, her overall agility and dexterity were on par with Ty Lee and Azula; she was able to keep up with both of her companions and easily take down anyone who crossed their path.
An order of warriors named after the Avatar of the same name, the Kyoshi Warriors were skilled martial artists and fighters whose fighting style was rooted in utilizing their opponent's energy against them and exploiting openings. Utilizing war fans like their patron Avatar before them, they utilized their fans as an extension of their body for both attack and defense. Additionally, each warrior was outfitted with a retractable shield and a katana for more specialized and deadly encounters.
