Bad visual effects in superhero movies are nothing new; if anything, they symbolize&nbsp;a proud tradition of lousy effects in superhero movies dating back to even the best films. Superman (1978)&nbsp;may be a classic, but&nbsp;many of its effects are anything but; even still, it&rsquo;s considered one of <a class="edS-cl" href="https://www.ranker.com/crowdranked-list/best-superheroes-all-time?ref=internalCrossLinking_keyword">the best superhero</a> movies. When a superhero&nbsp;film cuts corners and/or <a href="http://www.ranker.com/list/worst-action-scenes-in-film/anncasano">lacks self awareness</a>, it runs the risk of reducing your heroes to zeroes. The worst special effects usually go hand-in-hand with lousy set design, unfortunate direction, and actors chewing scenes&nbsp;like it was there last meal. &nbsp;It all comes together to make a perfect storm of awful.

Any list of truly awful superhero movies should include two of the worst offenders: Catwoman&nbsp;and Batman &amp; Robin. Even with Halle Berry poured into a skin-tight, leather outfit, the movie still sucked. And Batman &amp; Robin&nbsp;might have had some George Clooney action going on, but even the mighty Clooney couldn&#39;t save this train wreck of a film. It is remembered as one of the worst comic book movies of all time.

You&#39;ll notice some oldies listed among these top 10+ awful superhero movies, too, and be warned: In some cases, you&#39;ve likely forgotten all about these bad films. It&#39;s a self-preservation thing. You just want to erase these movies from your mind and forget that they ever happened. Apologies for the trauma.

Oh, and let&#39;s discuss horrible sequels and reboots: For whatever reason, some of the suckiest superhero movies ever made also have sequels, or someone decides to reboot them because they weren&#39;t bad enough to begin with.&nbsp;Yeah, some of these films are definitely among the <a href="/crowdranked-list/the-worst-sequels-of-all-time" target="_blank">worst movie sequels of all time</a>.

Superhero movies set a certain precedent: Someone is going to die at the end. It&#39;s not universal, but it&#39;s true often enough. It&#39;s one of the ways a franchise can close one chapter, making&nbsp;it possible to move on with new characters without having to perpetually rehash the same material. As a result, superhero films are responsible for a number of&nbsp;unforgettable death scenes - though not all of these deaths are burned into the audience&#39;s memory like the rest.

Some death scenes aren&#39;t very memorable at all - often because&nbsp;the&nbsp;movie itself is poorly executed, or otherwise fails to meet expectations, and thus can&#39;t stick the landing on a a key death scene.

As the studios keep cranking out superhero film after superhero film things change. Drastically.Whether it's technological advances in CGI (The Hulk) recasting of your character (Batman) or both (Spider-Man) it makes a big difference as to how the character is portrayed and the overall tone of the film. Some (not all) of Ang Lee's Hulk's problems were that they were trying to create a fully realized character that the technology just wasn't ready for yet. Captain America: 1979 & 2018

Captain America

Captain America is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by cartoonists Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, the character first appeared in Captain America Comics #1 (cover dated March 1941) from Timely Comics, a predecessor of Marvel Comics. The character wears a costume bearing an American flag motif, and he utilizes a nearly indestructible shield which he throws as a projectile. Captain America is the alter ego of Steve Rogers, a frail young man enhanced to the peak of human perfection by an experimental serum to aid the United States government's efforts in World War II. Captain America was the first Marvel Comics character to appear in media outside comics with the release of the 1944 movie serial, Captain America.

Thor: 1988 & 2018

Thor

Thor is a fictional superhero that appears in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character, based on the Norse mythological deity of the same name, is the Asgardian god of thunder and possesses the enchanted hammer Mjolnir, which grants him the ability of flight and weather manipulation amongst his other superhuman attributes.
Debuting in the Silver Age of Comic Books, the character first appeared in Journey into Mystery #83 and was created by editor-plotter Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, and penciller-plotter Jack Kirby. He has starred in several ongoing series and limited series, and is a founding member of the superhero team the Avengers, appearing in each volume of that series. The character has also appeared in associated Marvel merchandise including animated television series, clothing, toys, trading cards, video games, and movies.
The 2011 film Thor, based on the character and comic, was directed by Kenneth Branagh and starred Chris Hemsworth as Thor. Hemsworth reappears as Thor in The Avengers and Thor: The Dark World and will reprise his role in the sequels Avengers: Age of Ultron and Thor: Ragnarok as a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise.

Wonder Woman is a fictional superhero who appears in comic books published by DC Comics. The character is a warrior princess of the Amazons and is known in her homeland as Princess Diana of Themyscira. When outside her homeland, she is sometimes known by the secret identity Diana Prince. Aquaman

Aquaman is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. Created by Paul Norris and Mort Weisinger, the character debuted in More Fun Comics #73. Initially a backup feature in DC's anthology titles, Aquaman later starred in several volumes of a solo title. During the late 1950s and 1960s superhero-revival period known as the Silver Age, he was a founding member of the Justice League of America. In the 1990s Modern Age, Aquaman's character became more serious than in most previous interpretations, with storylines depicting the weight of his role as king of Atlantis.
Later accounts reconciled both facets of the character, casting Aquaman as serious and brooding, saddled with an ill reputation, and struggling to find a true role and purpose beyond his public side as a deposed king and a fallen hero. The character will appear in the 2016 film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, portrayed by Jason Momoa, with a solo film following in 2018.
