The events of the Star Wars saga may have happened a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, but it still takes place in a universe where time passes like it does in ours. Even though Star Wars characters all live on different planets with presumably different time cycles, they still have ages just like we do. Have you ever wondered how old Rey is at the beginning of The Force Awakens? Or how old Boba Fett is when he captures Han Solo in The Empire Strikes Back? We can find out thanks to the official canon chronology

Here are the ages of some of your favorite Star Wars characters at various points throughout the series.

Darth Vader is listed (or ranked) 1 on the list How Old Are Star Wars Characters, Really?

When we finally see Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker without his mask at the end of Return of the Jedi, he looks to be at an advanced age. So it might surprise to you to hear that he was only 45 years old when he sacrificed himself to throw the emperor down the Death Star elevator shaft and save Luke.

It's likely that his withered appearance without his mask is due to the injuries he sustained in his lightsaber duel with Obi-Wan on Mustafar.

Obi-Wan Kenobi is listed (or ranked) 2 on the list How Old Are Star Wars Characters, Really?

In A New Hope, Luke's uncle Owen Lars refers to Obi-Wan as "a crazy old man." But really, he's more like "a crazy late-middle-aged man," since he's just 57 years old at the time of his passing. (Actor Alec Guinness was 63 when A New Hope was filmed.)

When Obi-Wan's journey begins in The Phantom Menace, he's a young Jedi of 25. He's 10 years into training Anakin in Attack of the Clones

Han Solo is listed (or ranked) 3 on the list How Old Are Star Wars Characters, Really?

A much bigger age difference than the one between Anakin and Padmé is the age difference between Han and Leia. When Han first shows up in A New Hope, he's deep into his career as a smuggler - at one point he mentions how he's been "from one end of this galaxy to the other." His actual age at this time is 32 years old.

Princess Leia is royalty and commands respect from everyone she meets, but she's surprisingly just 19 years old during A New Hope. Han and Leia's relationship begins three years later during the events of The Empire Strikes Back.

Chewbacca is listed (or ranked) 4 on the list How Old Are Star Wars Characters, Really?

Often, the non-human species of the Star Wars universe have much different life cycles than humans do. When we first meet Chewbacca in A New Hope, he's 200 years old - which isn't old for a Wookie.

According to the encyclopedia Star Wars: Absolutely Everything You Need to Know, the average Wookie lifespan is 400 years, meaning Chewie is middle-aged.
