Historically, video game characters have been hyper-masculine. And if the game is geared toward an older audience, sometimes characters are prone to being harsh and having an extreme lack of empathy. The vast majority of player characters and villains in popular genres - such as first-person shooters and role-playing games - are not exactly affectionate beings. Instead, they are often rough video game characters whose sole purpose is to rack up a body count.
However, there are moments in even the most savage titles where characters can show a sweeter side to their personalities. Whether it involves making an unexpected moral choice or performing a small gesture, even the grimmest and most gritty figures can be big ol' softies. These instances are some of the most emotional moments in video games, as the player tends not to expect them to happen, increasing the impact tenfold.
Agent 47 is a genetically enhanced clone and a slayer who is exceptionally skilled at his job - anyone who gets in his way is likely to be disposed of without a second thought. Despite this professional work ethic, the hitman has moments of levity that don't involve pumping someone full of lead.
This includes one instance when he manages to lay down an unexpectedly good drum solo, and another time when he squeezes in a bit of modeling on the catwalk during a mission.
None of the gods shown in the God of War series are particularly kind or tender, and Kratos is perhaps the most wicked of them all. He goes on rampages that would put most super-villains to shame. Yet in God of War (2018), he has mellowed somewhat, given that he has the responsibility of caring for a son.
When he sees a vase depicting himself slaughtering innocents, he appears embarrassed and ashamed. Rather than allow his son to see it, he smashes the pottery so no one can.
Dom Santiago, much like his compatriot named Marcus Fenix, is a huge, hulking space marine. Throughout the original Gears of War trilogy, he fights a constant tide of locusts, then loses his wife to the alien creatures. After all of this, it would make sense if he were to have mental health issues or continue to seek revenge.
Instead, in Gears of War 3, he has another job in addition to his soldiering duties. Dom has taken responsibility for the ship's garden, growing tomatoes and other vegetables in his spare time.
As you might expect from the villain who was able to defeat Batman by breaking his back, Bane is one of the tougher bosses in Batman: Arkham City. He can take a tremendous amount of punishment and still be capable of pounding anyone around him into pulp.
However, if a player completes a particular Riddler challenge that focuses on Bane, they can discover a secret about the escaped convict - he has a soft spot for a cute, little teddy bear.
