Synth rock, also known to many as electro rock and electronic rock, is one of the most popular genres of rock music to gain traction throughout the past few decades. Although its origins are in psychedelia, synth rock didn't become commercially popular until the 1970s and 80s. At the time, synth rock was associated with the intricate sounds of prog rock, but over time, synth rock has become its own quirky style infused with indie rock. Obviously, the key element of synth rock is the use of a synthesizer and other electronic instruments; and without these instruments, synth rock would not exist.
So, what are the best synth rock bands? Any list of synth rock musicians has to include the names Passion Pit, Yes, ELO, Devo and Depeche Mode. These bands are closely associated with synth rock, both when the genre first emerged and today. The best synth pop bands have catchy melodies that are powered by a synthesizer, or at minimum, music that utilized synths. In the 2000s, more synth rock bands rose to fame with the growth of technology and the ability to record music on a single laptop computer.
That said, it's up to you to determine which synth rock groups and singers are the greatest. There are a slew of terrific synth rockers, but only a few can be considered at or near the top. This list answers the questions "who are the best synth rock bands of all time?" and "who is the greatest synth rock musician ever?"
If you know enough about the genre, please vote based on the quality of the artists' music (albums and songs) instead of just voting for the most popular synth rock bands that you might've heard of.
